Rayo Vallecano announced this Wednesday the contract renewal with midfielder Unai López. The 30-year-old player signed a new contract that keeps him at the Vallecas club until the end of the 2028-29 season.
The decision represents an important reinforcement of the cast’s stability for the next three seasons. Unai López, who had been scouted by other clubs, prioritized staying in the team where he established himself as a fundamental player in the midfield.
Olympiacos, coached by José Luis Mendilibar, even showed concrete interest in the player. However, the Basque midfielder chose to continue with the Rayo project, rejecting the Greek proposal.
Since his definitive return to the club in 2021, Unai López has played more than 150 games with the Franjirroja shirt. Last season, he participated in dozens of matches, contributing goals and assists that helped the team in LaLiga.
The extension of the contract until 2029 comes at a strategic time. With the end of the previous contract approaching, Rayo guarantees the permanence of an experienced player, known for his vision of the game and his identification with the club.
Unai López was born on October 30, 1995 and began his career at Athletic Bilbao. Passages at Leganés and loan to Rayo in 2017-18 prepared him for his definitive return, where he became a reference in the sector.
The renewal reinforces Rayo’s planning for the next season. The club maintains a core of players who know the intensity of LaLiga and the pressure of the fans in Vallecas.
