Sony began releasing the 26.04-13.40.00 update for the PlayStation 5 system this Thursday (4). The firmware, which occupies around 1.2 GB, arrives gradually to users.

The patch brings no new features or changes visible to the player. Official notes only indicate improvements in system software performance and stability.

Anyone who has the PS5 connected to the internet should see the download start automatically when turning on the console. After downloading, simply confirm the installation to restart the device and complete the process.

Updates of this type are common and are mainly used for bug fixes or preventative maintenance. So far, there are no widespread reports of resolved problems or new issues caused by the update.

Maintenance updates keep the console reliable

The PS5 has already accumulated millions of units in operation for years. Keeping the software up to date helps avoid instabilities that could affect everything from gaming performance to menu navigation.

While the update is small, it comes at a time when Sony is seeing signs of recovery in the first-party gaming ecosystem. After years of falling sales of titles produced by the company itself, 2025 marked a reversal of trend.

Ghost of Yotei boosts exclusive sales

Compiled data shows that PlayStation first-party games saw their first annual increase in five years in the 2025/2026 period. The highlight wasGhost of Yotei, which helped increase the total number of units sold.

The console, in turn, has already exceeded 93 million units shipped worldwide. Even with quarterly variations in shipments, the installed base remains robust and attracts both its own and third-party launches.

In practice, updates like this ensure that the hardware continues to run smoothly even with the arrival of new games and future features. There are no signs that Sony is preparing major changes to the interface or other features for this specific version.
