The 33rd edition of the Brazilian Music Award named João Gomes as the big winner of the night held on Tuesday (10), at the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro. The singer from Pernambuco took three trophies, standing out in a ceremony that brought together different generations and musical styles around the tribute to Cazuza.

Presented by Débora Bloch and Alice Wegmann, the party celebrated the work of the Rio composer, who died in 1990. Ney Matogrosso, Simone, Marina Sena, Seu Jorge, Luedji Luna, Zizi Possi and Ludmilla, among others, reinterpreted songs such as “Exagerado”, “O Tempo Não Para” and “Brasil”. Journalist Pedro Bial opened the night highlighting the power of Cazuza’s words.

Tribute reinforces political and poetic legacy

Lucinha Araújo, Cazuza’s mother, and reports from those who lived with the artist enriched the celebration. Ney Matogrosso closed the night with “Pro Dia Nascer Feliz”, reinforcing the tone of permanence of the honoree’s work. The choice of Cazuza as the honoree was unanimous on the award board, which includes names such as Gilberto Gil.

The event, sponsored by BTG Pactual for the second time, awarded awards in 18 categories and recognized both the new generation and the old guard. João Gomes came away with victories in Canção Popular (best artist and best release with “Pé de Serrita”) and Projeto Especial (with the tribute to Dominguinho alongside Mestrinho and Jota.Pê).

Other highlights of the award

Chitãozinho & Xororó, Djavan and Luedji Luna took two awards each. Among the winners are Olodum (Axé), Deize Tigrona (Funk), Hamilton de Holanda (Instrumental), Alcione (Samba) and Black Pantera (Rock). The revelation was Fitti.

The award also valued regional and experimental projects, such as the work of Orquestra Malassombro and audiovisual productions. With almost 10 thousand entries from different states, the award reinforces the promotion of Brazilian music throughout the year.

What João Gomes’ victory represents

At 23 years old, João Gomes consolidates the space of forró and roots music on the national scene, mixing northeastern traditions with broad popular appeal. His dominance on the night, alongside veterans such as Chitãozinho & Xororó and Djavan, shows how the award balances innovation and preservation of Brazilian identity — exactly the spirit of the tribute to Cazuza, who always mixed rock, MPB and engagement.
