The Senegal team makes its debut in a world tournament this Tuesday, November 16, facing the France team. One of the main highlights of the African team is the renowned goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, who is currently 34 years old.
The question often arises as to whether Édouard Mendy is related to French left-back Ferland Mendy, an athlete who plays for Real Madrid. Many fans wonder if there is any family connection between the two players who share the same surname.
Goalkeepers and full-backs: Clarifying the supposed family connection between Mendy athletes
Despite both carrying the surname “Mendy”, a detailed investigation reveals that the athletes are not brothers. There is no blood link or direct kinship formally recognized between Édouard and Ferland.
In contrast to Édouard’s situation, Ferland Mendy was not called up to join the French squad for the World Cup. The defender faced a challenging season, marked by a long recovery from injuries that compromised his performance and kept him away from the field for a considerable period.
On the other hand, the Senegalese goalkeeper is widely considered a key player for his national team. His performance was crucial to the team’s excellent performance during the African Cup of Nations (CAN), held between December 2025 and January 2026.
Interestingly, even with Senegal’s victory on the field in the CAN final, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) made a controversial decision, awarding the trophy to Morocco, the other finalist, following controversial incidents that occurred during the decisive match. This decision generated great repercussion in the sports press.
