Matt Duffer, one of the creators of the acclaimed series Stranger Things, is in the process of leaving television production to focus on future endeavors. The Duffer brothers, who dedicated almost a decade exclusively to creating Stranger Things, are preparing for a new professional phase.
Many creative professionals face the complexities of criticism and public reactions, and brothers Matt and Ross Duffer are no exception. They intentionally exposed themselves to fans’ opinions by actively participating in communities on platforms like Reddit.
Despite the challenges, they approach the feedback lightly, mentioning on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that, although they have reduced their frequency, they still remember moments when they had fun with fan theories that were far from the planned direction for the series.
“Sometimes I look at the Reddit forums,” said Ross Duffer. “It’s always fascinating to watch how people react to elements and characters, and it’s fun to laugh when we realize how wrong some theories are. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it does happen occasionally.”
“And sometimes the negativity creeps in, but that’s okay,” his brother Matt added. He explains that, now that the series is finished, he is stepping away from the fan community to focus on an original film and a Stranger Things spin-off already in development. “We’re in a very peculiar period where I’m trying to detach myself from the series. It’s a strange feeling. So I feel a little distant from the fans at the moment, but I believe it’s a matter of time before I readjust.”
After almost ten years of uninterrupted work on Stranger Things, it is understandable that Duffer is looking for space to dedicate himself to the duo’s next creative challenges. His statements indicate that this “withdrawal” is motivated by the need to redirect his creative energy, rather than by any intention to avoid negative associations with the work.
The brothers revealed that they are drafting a film script to fulfill a contract with Paramount, although the project is still in the early stages of development. Specific details about the plot remain confidential, but they assure fans that the new feature film will have the essence expected from their productions.
The conclusion of Stranger Things, with its five seasons, took place at the end of 2025, and the final episode generated divided opinions among viewers, leaving some uncertainty about Eleven’s fate. However, the Duffer brothers do not plan to revisit the town of Hawkins anytime soon, as the projected spin-off will feature completely new characters and a narrative with no direct relation to the original series.
All seasons of Stranger Things are fully available for streaming on the Netflix platform.
