João Fonseca prioritizes Wimbledon and leaves Eastbourne with a shoulder problem
Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca has decided not to participate in the ATP 250 in Eastbourne, which takes place in England this week. Despite being second seed and already having his opponent defined for the first round, the athlete chose to abandon the tournament due to slight discomfort in his shoulder. The decision, as communicated on his social networks, aims to ensure his best physical condition for Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year, which starts next week.
In an official statement, João Fonseca himself explained the preventive measure. “After feeling slight discomfort in my right shoulder, my team and I decided, as a precaution, not to compete in the Eastbourne ATP. The objective is to arrive in the best possible shape at Wimbledon”, declared the athlete.
Recently, the young tennis player competed in the ATP 500 in Halle, Germany, where he had an early elimination in the singles draw. However, Fonseca demonstrated a good performance in the doubles competition, reaching the final alongside German Daniel Altmaier. This experience was fundamental for the Brazilian to gain rhythm and adapt to grass, a surface with a more restricted calendar of tournaments on the professional circuit.
The highly anticipated Wimbledon tournament, the third Grand Slam of the year, will take place the following week. João Fonseca secured the 24th seeded position, a crucial strategic advantage.
