Socialist Claire Valdez wins Democratic primary for New York’s 7th Congressional District

State Assembly Member Claire Valdez secured victory in Tuesday’s Democratic primary for New York’s 7th Congressional District, defeating three challengers in a contest to succeed longtime Representative Nydia Velázquez. The democratic socialist candidate, who led polls throughout the campaign, emerged victorious over Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, City Council Member Julie Won, and civil rights attorney Vichal Kumar. Velázquez, who made history as the first Puerto Rican woman elected to Congress, announced last year she would not seek re-election after serving more than three decades.

Mamdani endorsement shapes primary outcome

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly endorsed Valdez ahead of the primary, praising her support during his mayoral campaign and alignment with his progressive vision. In a statement published on Valdez’s campaign website, Mamdani emphasized their shared commitment to working-class priorities. “Claire Valdez stood with me on day one because she understands how change is won — by building power, raising expectations and delivering for working people,” the mayor stated. He highlighted her labor movement background and ability to achieve concrete results on housing, healthcare, and workers’ rights, calling her “the kind of partner I need in Congress.”

The endorsement created friction with Velázquez, who had supported Mamdani’s mayoral run but backed Reynoso in the congressional race. The outgoing representative publicly criticized the mayor’s involvement in January, warning that “honeymoons are short, and people need to pay attention to the work at hand.” Velázquez expressed concern that mayoral involvement in primaries “opens up fights” with constituents and serves as a distraction from governance responsibilities.

Progressive platform drives campaign message

Valdez campaigned on an openly progressive agenda that includes several controversial positions. She has called for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, expanding universal healthcare coverage, and significantly raising taxes on wealthy individuals. Her platform also emphasizes increasing affordable housing availability and strengthening labor unions across industries. The candidate has been an outspoken critic of Israeli government policies, positioning herself firmly within the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

  • Abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement
  • Expand universal healthcare access
  • Increase taxes on high-income earners
  • Boost affordable housing development
  • Strengthen labor union protections

Her campaign website framed the race as offering voters more than symbolic resistance. “It’s a district that doesn’t just want strongly worded letters but a real economic vision to win the working class away from Trumpism,” campaign materials stated. “That’s what Claire will deliver.” The messaging reflected a broader strategy among progressive Democrats to present economic populism as an alternative to conservative appeals to working-class voters.

National progressive groups rally behind Valdez

Beyond local endorsements, Valdez received support from prominent national progressive organizations and personalities. The Justice Democrats, the activist group that helped launch Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s successful 2018 House campaign, threw its organizational weight behind the Valdez campaign. Controversial political commentator and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker also publicly supported her candidacy, appearing at campaign events and promoting her platform to his substantial online following.

At a Brooklyn rally earlier this month organized by the New York chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, Piker called Valdez and fellow candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier “giants” of the socialist movement. Avila Chevalier is challenging five-term incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District. “For the longest time, I thought we were so far away from socialism, and we might still be far away from socialism, but we do have an opportunity right here, right now, more than ever before,” Piker told rally attendees. He predicted that Mamdani’s mayoral victory could be the first of many progressive wins, suggesting that by the end of the midterm elections, the mayor “will seem unremarkable because, by then, we will have elected so many brilliant fighters into legislative offices throughout New York City and the state.”

District demographics favor progressive politics

The 7th Congressional District spans progressive neighborhoods across Brooklyn and Queens, creating favorable terrain for left-wing candidates. The district’s political composition has historically supported candidates advocating for expanded social programs, stronger labor protections, and aggressive government intervention in housing and healthcare markets. Valdez’s victory reflects the district’s ideological leanings and the organizational strength of progressive groups in urban Democratic primaries. With the Democratic nomination secured in this heavily blue district, Valdez faces minimal opposition in the general election and is virtually assured of winning the congressional seat. Her victory adds another voice to the progressive caucus in the House of Representatives, continuing the leftward shift visible in New York City politics over recent election cycles.
