Einstein Probe detects rare double cosmic explosion that defies scientific models
A Chinese probe, named Einstein Probe, has captured an extraordinary cosmic event that has intrigued the international scientific community. The record refers to an explosion in space that does not correspond to the patterns of stellar eruptions or other cosmic phenomena already documented and understood.
The finding consists of two flashes of X-rays that appeared in sequence, separated by around 200 seconds, as reported by the Live Science portal. This detection, unprecedented in its form, raises fundamental questions about astrophysical processes and challenges existing theoretical models, suggesting the possibility of yet unknown phenomena in the universe.
The detection of an unexpected signal in the Einstein Probe probe routine
Launched in 2024, the Einstein Probe probe is a collaborative project between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the European Space Agency. Its main goal is to scan the cosmos for high-energy events that come and go quickly, offering a window into the study of transient phenomena. The probe was developed specifically to monitor energetic explosions that occur in a matter of minutes, but what it found exceeded expectations.
On March 5, 2024, the probe recorded the event called EP240305a. First, an X-ray flash lasting approximately two minutes was detected. Surprisingly, a second, even more prolonged pulse was observed about 200 seconds after the first, making the occurrence unique.
The presence of this second X-ray peak was what surprised the researchers the most. This type of repetition in such a short interval, with subsequent pulses of high intensity, is not a common feature in already cataloged astronomical events, challenging current understanding of the dynamics of these emissions.

Faced with the phenomenon, observation teams on several telescopes, both terrestrial and space-based, were activated and directed to the region of detection. To try to classify event EP240305a, researchers carried out detailed comparisons with a series of already known cosmic phenomena. They analyzed the possibility of it being a tidal disruption, which occurs when a black hole disintegrates a star, or even a short-lived stellar explosion. Radio emissions typically associated with cosmic eruptions and fast X-ray transients that are already known in astronomy were also considered. However, none of these analogies proved to be fully compatible with all the characteristics observed in the event, reinforcing the inexplicable nature of the discovery.
