Socialist wave reshapes New York politics as Mamdani-backed candidates defeat establishment

New York City witnessed a political earthquake as three far-left candidates endorsed by socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured decisive victories over Democratic establishment figures in Tuesday’s congressional primaries. The results mark a significant shift in the party’s power dynamics, with progressive challengers defeating incumbent representatives across multiple districts. Mayor Mamdani, just six months into his tenure leading the nation’s most populous city, emerges as a formidable kingmaker within Democratic ranks. The outcomes signal growing momentum for the socialist wing of the party, despite Republican warnings about the consequences of leftward movement.

The upset victories demonstrate Mamdani’s expanding political influence beyond his mayoral role. Each winning candidate campaigned on affordability issues critical to New York residents facing one of the country’s highest costs of living. All three also voiced sharp criticism of Israel, positioning themselves firmly within the progressive movement’s foreign policy stance.

Community organizer defeats Hispanic Caucus chairman in historic upset

The most stunning result emerged from New York’s 13th Congressional District, where 32-year-old community organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier narrowly defeated 71-year-old incumbent Adriano Espaillat. The outcome carries particular significance as Espaillat serves as Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair and made history as the first Dominican American elected to the U.S. House. Despite endorsements from numerous party leaders, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Espaillat could not overcome the progressive challenge after representing the district for a decade. Chevalier, identifying as a democratic socialist, mobilized grassroots support to edge past the establishment favorite in a race that captured national attention.

Democratic Socialist candidate claims open seat by double digits

State Assembly Member Claire Valdez, aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America and backed by Mamdani, secured a commanding victory in the race to succeed retiring Representative Nydia Velazquez. Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso by more than 20 percentage points, despite Reynoso receiving Velazquez’s endorsement. In her victory speech, Valdez framed the win as part of a broader movement transformation.

“Tonight, we haven’t just won an election. We have declared that this movement is durable, that it is growing, and that it will not stop until working people are no longer asked to just build the table, no longer just offered a seat at the table, but will run the table,” Valdez told supporters gathered at her primary celebration.

Former comptroller crushes incumbent representative

Progressive Brad Lander, former New York City comptroller, delivered a crushing defeat to incumbent Representative Dan Goldman. Lander previously competed against Mamdani in last year’s crowded Democratic mayoral primary before becoming one of his strongest general election supporters. The victory demonstrates Lander’s ability to leverage both progressive credentials and establishment experience.

During his victory speech, Lander, who is Jewish, addressed tensions surrounding Israel criticism within the party. “You can criticize Israel and not be antisemitic. You can be an anti-Zionist and not be antisemitic,” Lander stated, defending positions that have sparked controversy among some Democratic voters and donors.

Mayor stakes claim as progressive powerbroker

Mamdani campaigned relentlessly for all three congressional candidates, making their races a test of his political capital beyond city governance. The mayor repeatedly emphasized that the Democratic Party “must change,” positioning Tuesday’s results as validation of that message. At Valdez’s victory celebration, Mamdani articulated his vision for party transformation.

“Let’s hear it for a politics that will never forget working people. For a politics that is ready to write a new chapter in our party’s history, and for a politics that realizes the old politics that got us to this crisis, is not the politics that’s going to get us out of this crisis,” the mayor declared to enthusiastic supporters.

Progressive Representative Ro Khanna of California, considered a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, characterized the New York results as evidence of fundamental party evolution. “This shows we have a new party,” Khanna stated, suggesting the victories represent more than isolated local outcomes.

Republicans seize opportunity to paint Democrats as radical

Republican strategists immediately leveraged the progressive victories to frame Democrats as increasingly extreme. The National Republican Congressional Committee released statements arguing the results demonstrate socialist control over the party. “Tonight wasn’t just a bad night for so-called ‘Leader’ Hakeem Jeffries. It was the night the Democrat establishment officially surrendered to Zohran Mamdani and the socialist wing of their party,” stated NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella.

The Republican messaging aims to use Mamdani as a political weapon against vulnerable Democrats in competitive districts ahead of midterm elections. With Republicans defending a razor-thin House majority, the party views the progressive victories as ammunition for portraying all Democrats as radical socialists. Republicans have consistently characterized Mamdani as extreme since his mayoral campaign.

Trump endorsements prevail in Republican contests

President Donald Trump maintained his winning streak in Republican primaries across multiple states Tuesday. In upstate New York, Trump-backed Anthony Constantino, a businessman and former boxer making his first political run, defeated retired Marine Corps Colonel Robert Smullen. Smullen had secured state party backing but could not overcome Trump’s endorsement power. Constantino will compete for the seat being vacated by retiring Representative Elise Stefanik.

In South Carolina’s gubernatorial runoff, Trump endorsed both candidates, guaranteeing a win regardless of outcome. State Attorney General Alan Wilson defeated Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette by more than two-to-one margin. Trump initially endorsed Evette late last month before the primary, then added Wilson to his endorsements on Friday in an apparent hedge. Wilson topped a crowded primary field that included Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, both of whom endorsed Wilson after failing to advance. Senator Ted Cruz also backed Wilson before the runoff.

Wilson acknowledged Trump in his victory speech as vote counting continued, demonstrating the president’s continued influence over Republican primary voters. The results across New York, Maryland, Utah and South Carolina reinforced Trump’s position as the dominant force shaping Republican candidate selection heading into the midterm cycle.
