The first reviews of the highly anticipated Star Fox game are now available, ahead of the official launch for the Nintendo Switch 2, which is coming soon. The arrival of the title generates great expectations among fans of the franchise.

Considered the first “unreleased” game in the series since Star Fox Zero, released for Wii U in 2016, the new version, however, is largely based on Star Fox 64. Despite being a recent release, it is more of a robust reinterpretation of the classic.

Even for those who have already experienced the original game, there are several reasons to explore this new edition. Developer Velan Studios, known for Mario Kart Live, has implemented significantly improved graphics, new cinematic scenes with full voice acting, new mission briefings between stages, an exclusive challenge mode, a battle mode with online multiplayer and optional controls that use the mouse via Joy-Con 2.

The epic journey in the Lylat system renewed

Scientist Andross is determined to dominate the Lylat star system, and only Fox McCloud, together with the Star Fox team, can stop him. Players take command of the Arwing, the combat aircraft, to travel through the system, confronting enemy forces and performing exciting aerial maneuvers, such as spins and somersaults, to avoid attacks. There is also the possibility of discovering alternative routes through the Lylat System in different games, participating in new missions and varied challenges. The adventure expands with the inclusion of an unprecedented 4×4 multiplayer Battle Mode, which allows friends to come together.

The new Star Fox stands out as a reimagined version of Star Fox 64, with a cinematic approach that includes completely reworked character designs and revamped visuals for each stage. The title also features detailed cut scenes, fully voiced dialogue and an immersive orchestral soundtrack. Among the new features are mouse controls for Joy-Con 2 and a GameChat feature, which immerses the player in the cockpit as their favorite characters from the Star Fox universe.

Modernized exploration of classic settings

This modernized adventure, inspired by Star Fox 64, features a complete visual overhaul, taking full advantage of the potential and performance of the Nintendo Switch 2. Players will be able to explore multiple planets and the interior of a nebula in the Lylat System, from the vibrant world of Corneria to the desolate, polluted oceans of Zoness. Additionally, new cinematic cutscenes, with fully voiced dialogue and never-before-seen mission briefings between stages, deepen understanding of the characters and environments of the Star Fox universe.

Strategies and intense action in space combat

Inside the cockpit of the Arwing, a high-performance aerospace fighter, players use laser blasts to eliminate opposing forces. You can brake in the air to disorient enemies, activate Boost to gain extra speed, perform somersaults and roll to defend yourself from aerial attacks.

Different game modes to engage riders

Star Fox offers a variety of distinct modes, including familiar and new options:

  • Campaign Mode:It allows you to explore a wide range of planets, navigate asteroid fields and participate in free-flying aerial combat. Players can choose between Easy or Normal difficulties initially, and improve their skills to earn all the necessary medals and unlock Expert difficulty. Objectives completed, enemies defeated, and other actions influence the route and what happens in each phase. Different routes affect the phases encountered by the system, encouraging replayability.
  • Challenge Mode:It offers the opportunity to revisit already completed phases, facing a series of new objectives and challenges, some not present in Campaign Mode. Challenges are available on Normal and Expert difficulties.
  • Battle Mode:Allows teams to come together to participate in all-new 4-on-4 aerial combat, with up to eight players split between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf. This mode has three phases with different objectives: secure control of a specific zone in Corneria, collect energy crystals in Fichina or recover cargo from space pirates in Sector Y. Players can participate in online team battles through private matches or meet opponents from anywhere. With GameShare, up to four players can play locally or online via GameChat. While online GameShare is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, local GameShare allows compatibility with both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch consoles.

Exclusive innovations for Nintendo Switch 2

The release of Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 introduces enhanced functionality for players:

  • Joy-Con 2 controls with the mouse:When playing solo in Campaign or Challenge Mode, you can easily switch between traditional button controls and mouse controls using Joy-Con 2. This mouse feature provides more intuitive aiming. If a friend joins the match, either on the same console or via GameShare via GameChat, they can take on the role of gunner, while the main player focuses on flying, or vice versa.
  • Character Avatars and Augmented Reality Filters in GameChat:Players can appear as Fox McCloud or any team member during conversations with friends, using an interactive avatar that replicates expressions and movements in GameChat. Additionally, the game’s Augmented Reality Filters allow you to add accessories, such as Star Fox-style ears or a Falco-inspired beak, that move as the player speaks.
