A new title in the Star Wars universe promises to shake up the racing game scene, transforming the classic pod race into a challenging experience with roguelite touches. “Star Wars: Galactic Racer”, which will be released on October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, is now available for pre-order and we tested first-hand what it offers to fans of the franchise and speed enthusiasts.

During initial testing, it became clear that players’ skills will be put to the test. The Galactic League, the scene of competitions, demands the most from the most daring pilots in the galaxy, and the level of challenge is remarkably high. This approach ensures that with each race, the quest for victory is an intense and rewarding journey.

Approximately one hour of gameplay was explored in campaign and arcade modes during Summer Game Fest: Play Days. The experience revealed not only an extremely competent and fun racing game, but also a title with surprising depth and a high replayability factor, characteristics that can ensure a prolonged useful life for the game. This is crucial for the genre, as it prevents the game from becoming repetitive quickly, encouraging players to return for new attempts and strategies.

An engaging plot behind the speed

The single-player campaign puts players in the role of Shade, an enigmatic pilot driven by a reckoning with Kestar Bool, one of the league’s current champions. The rivalry plays out on the race tracks, adding a layer of drama to the competition.

This narrative premise is a classic element, but with a Star Wars guise, which surprised many. Racing games rarely invest in such an elaborate story, often limiting themselves to introducing names without delving into their motivations, and Fuse Games raises this expectation with a cinematic narrative.

Developers Fuse Games have demonstrated a clear understanding of their mission: to not only provide exciting races, but also to immerse players even more deeply into the rich Star Wars universe. This dedication makes events on and off the track matter, enriching players’ knowledge of the galaxy’s diverse species and cultures, such as the distinction between an Ardennian and a Besalisk.

Before each race, drivers can choose between three types of chassis, each directly influencing the style of play: the landspeeder, the speeder bike and the skim speeder. Each model offers a unique and fun riding sensation, adapting to different preferences and strategies.

The landspeeder, for example, has considerable weight and stands out for its ability to skid in curves, offering control and stability. The speeder bike, in turn, is ideal for high speed in a straight line, but requires greater skill in maneuvering, while the skim speeder, comparable to a TIE Fighter among racing vehicles, is built for tight curves and requires great mastery to control.

During most of the testing time, the choice fell on the landspeeder, prioritizing resistance over maximum speed. This decision proved to be strategic, as races actively encourage collisions with opponents to knock them off the track, a tactic that significantly increases the chances of victory.

Advanced features to dominate the tracks

Each speeder is equipped with an Afterburner, which provides a brief boost of speed and recharges throughout the race for continuous use. Additionally, there is the Ramjet, a special component that offers massive boost and allows you to throw opponents off the track, but with a high risk of the vehicle overheating.

On one occasion, the Ramjet was pushed to its maximum limit to observe its consequences, and the result was, as expected, disastrous. This system adds a layer of strategy and risk management that can decide the outcome of a race.

The campaign in a continuously evolving format

The campaign structure is organized into a Galactic Tour, divided into three acts, which is randomized with each new journey. Each tour guides the player through a series of events on different planets, with progression assured by completing increasingly challenging race sequences. This format, which refers to roguelite elements, ensures that each game is unique and unpredictable.

Galactic Racer defines this approach as a “run-based solo campaign”, which implies there are branching paths to consider during the tour. Each route can yield different rewards, which can be applied to improve the speeder, encouraging exploration and experimentation with different strategies.

This diversity of choices is one of the great attractions, offering multiple options with each new Galactic Tour started. The ability to adapt the player’s journey based on their decisions is a differentiator that increases the replayability factor, an aspect valued in modern games.

In the intervals between races, it is possible to improve the speeder’s basic attributes for the next Tour events. The better the player’s placement, the more Improvements can be applied. These improvements influence crucial elements such as the Afterburner, Battery, Cornering Control and Ramjet, as well as the exclusive features of each speeder, such as the landspeeder’s Drift, the speeder bike’s Kinetic Burst and the skim speeder’s Knife Edge.

The customization flexibility, which can be adjusted for each race, is a high point. Choosing to strengthen Afterburner or investing in better Cornering Control are strategic decisions that adapt to the style of play and the track in question. This tactical depth is one of the pillars of the challenge proposed by the game, as players need to consider the best choices for each specific situation.

Overcoming challenges and persistence

The game’s difficulty level is intrinsically linked to the League Tokens system, required to compete on a tour. Accumulating too many beats or failing to finish in the top three in a specific event results in the Token being revoked, ending the current journey and forcing the player to start over, competing in qualifiers to obtain a new Token.

While some items, such as Galactic Credits, will be retained, the elimination is a significant setback. In one of the tests, overconfidence led to an elimination when victory seemed close, resulting in the need to restart the tour. This partial “permadeath” mechanic is a hallmark of roguelites, which adds tension and value to each decision made.

Despite the racing setbacks, the main narrative is unaffected; the search for Kestar Bool continues, eventually. Eliminations are just deviations in the journey, reinforcing the idea that persistence is essential for success in the Galactic League. Among the true stars of the game, the vibrant scenarios and diversity of tracks that transport players directly to the most exotic and dangerous corners of the Star Wars galaxy stand out. Each race offers visual and audio immersion that complements the adrenaline of the competition.
