First cold wave of 2026 in Brazil sets multiple records for low temperatures in capitals
The first cold wave of the winter of 2026 caused a series of record low temperatures in several parts of Brazil this Thursday (25). The intensity and scope of these initial records of the season were notable, mainly affecting the Southeast, North and South regions of the country, which indicates a more severe arrival of cold compared to previous years for the same period.
According to meteorological analyses, capitals such as Florianópolis, Curitiba and Rio Branco dawned with the lowest temperatures of the year so far, indicating the strength of the polar air mass.
In Florianópolis, the thermometer registered 3.7°C in the north of the city, surpassing the previous record of 5.9°C, which had been the lowest on June 18. The data was compiled by EPAGRI.

Curitiba also established a new cold level in 2026, with a minimum of 2.3°C. The previous record was 2.5°C, recorded on May 11, according to information from the National Institute of Meteorology.

In the capital of Acre, Rio Branco, the minimum temperature reached 13.7°C on Thursday (25), setting a new record for the year. Previously, the lowest value had been 14.7°C, observed on May 11.
The city of Rio de Janeiro recorded its maximum temperature at 20.3°C, specifically in Marambaia, in the far west. The previous record for lowest maximum was 21.5°C, on June 16.
São Paulo experienced its lowest maximum temperature for the month of June in three decades, reaching 13.5°C, which demonstrates the severity of the cold wave in the country’s largest metropolis.
