With the end of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup approaching this Saturday, the competition for the last third-placed places intensifies, with three positions still undefined. The new model of the competition allows, in addition to the top two in each of the twelve groups, the eight best teams that occupy third place to also advance. Currently, five teams have already secured their place in the knockout stages, while others are depending on the final results of the round to confirm their passage.

Advancement criteria for teams classified third

All twelve teams that finish in third place in their respective groups are grouped into a single qualifying table.

The tiebreaker criteria are applied in the following sequence:

  • Overall team score;
  • Accumulated goal difference;
  • Total goals scored;
  • Fair play index (disciplinary);
  • Current position in the FIFA rankings.

Of these, the first eight secure a place in the round of 16, and the four with the worst performance are eliminated from the tournament.

Teams that have already stamped their passport for the next phase

Five nations have already guaranteed their place among the eight best third-placed teams, ensuring their passage to the knockout stage:

  • Sweden: 4 points, zero difference and seven goals scored;
  • Ecuador: 4 points, zero difference and two goals scored;
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina: 4 points and a negative goal difference;
  • Paraguay: 4 points and two negative goals;
  • Senegal: 3 points, two positive goals and eight goals scored.

Even with the remaining clashes in the three still active groups, these five teams will maintain their positions in the top eight, advancing with ease.

Situation of Uruguay, already out of the competition

Uruguay, under the command of Marcelo Bielsa, ended its participation in Group H with just two points, the result of two draws and one defeat. With the current scenario of at least eight teams in third place with three or more points, the elimination of the Uruguayan team is mathematically confirmed.

Iran’s possibilities to advance in the tournament

Currently in sixth place, Iran has three points, with a zero goal difference and three goals scored. To guarantee its permanence among the eight classified, the team needs one of the following conditions to be met:

  • Croatia’s defeat against Ghana;
  • Uzbekistan draw or win against DR Congo;
  • Result of victory in Algeria against Austria, avoiding a draw.

If any of these scenarios materialize, Iran will make history, qualifying for the round of 16 of a World Cup for the first time.

The combinations needed for South Korea

South Korea occupies provisional eighth position, with three points, a negative goal difference and two goals scored. To advance, the South Koreans depend on two of the following three combinations of results:

  • Ghana beat Croatia;
  • The confrontation between DR Congo and Uzbekistan ends in a draw, or Uzbekistan wins without causing a large rout;
  • Austria beats Algeria, or Algeria wins by a margin that keeps them behind South Korea on goal difference.

The difference in goal difference will be a crucial factor, as Croatia, Algeria and the team that finishes third in Group K can finish the group stage with the same three-point score.

Scotland’s complicated path towards the knockout stage

Currently in tenth place, Scotland has three points, a negative balance of three goals and only one goal scored. To progress in the championship, the Scottish team needs all of the following conditions to be met:

  • Ghana obtains a significant victory over Croatia;
  • DR Congo cannot beat Uzbekistan;
  • In the duel between Algeria and Austria, the loser ends up with a lower goal difference than Scotland.

This scenario is considered highly unlikely, since Scotland would need to simultaneously overcome the third-placed teams in Groups J, K and L.

Croatia’s position and what defines its ranking

Croatia starts the final round in seventh place among third-placed teams, with three points, with a negative goal difference and three goals scored. A simple draw against Ghana will take the team to four points, guaranteeing their qualification.

However, in case of defeat, the Croatian team will remain with three points, running the risk of being overtaken by South Korea, Algeria or other teams in third place, depending on the final results.

DR Congo’s challenges in securing a place

The Democratic Republic of Congo, with just one point, has the only alternative to victory over Uzbekistan. A victory would take them to four points, a mark that would ensure their place among the eight best teams in third place or, depending on other results in Group K, even second place.

A draw would result in just two points, sealing the team’s elimination. Similarly, a defeat would end their campaign, while Uzbekistan would occupy third place in the group.

Direct confrontation between Algeria and Austria and its impacts

Algeria and Austria, both with three points, will face a direct clash. In the event of a draw, both teams will reach four points, with one of them finishing second and the other third, but both qualifying for the next phase.

If there is a winner, this will secure their position in the top two of the group. The defeated team will finish third with three points, and their classification will depend on the difference in goals conceded and the final results of the Croatia and DR Congo games.
