Catherine, Princess of Wales, recently completed the challenging National Three Peaks Challenge in the United Kingdom, climbing the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in just 24 hours. The aim of the action was to raise funds and raise awareness for a charity dedicated to the fight against cancer.

The princess, popularly known as Kate, at 44, received a cancer diagnosis in March 2024. In early 2025, she announced that she was in remission after a period of chemotherapy, which gave an even deeper meaning to her initiative.

In a social media post on Sunday, Kensington Palace, the official residence of Kate and Prince William, said the Princess of Wales undertook the climb not only as a physical test but also as “an opportunity to explore life beyond diagnosis and give back.”

The National Three Peaks Challenge requires climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Mount Snowdon in Wales. The route totals 37 kilometers of walking and an elevation gain of 3,064 meters, all to be completed in one day. In addition to climbing, the endeavor involves 743 kilometers of travel between the different peaks.

Kate undertook the challenge in support of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, a charity linked to the hospital where she herself received treatment. The personal connection with the organization highlights the importance of the cause to the royals.

In a statement, the princess expressed her desire to “raise awareness about the deeper impact of serious illness and the importance of holistic health.” She emphasized that “the journey during and after treatment requires more than just medications.”

The Princess of Wales reinforced her point of view, reiterating that “the journey to overcome an illness goes beyond medicine”. His personal experience has been a driving force to advocate for a broader approach to health care.

The charity defines holistic cancer care as the integration of physical, emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing, complementing traditional medical treatments such as chemotherapy. According to Kate, “healing, whether personal or collective, is not just about fixing what’s wrong. It’s about finding balance in the way we live, between effort and acceptance.” Globally, millions of people receive a cancer diagnosis each year, making the princess’s message of comprehensive care even more relevant.

The princess completed the challenge alone, but had the support of the UK-based charity Mountain Rescue along the way. At the end, she was welcomed by her husband, Prince William, heir to the throne, her children Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte, as well as her parents and brother.

Reflecting on her own experience with a cancer diagnosis, Kate wrote in the social media post that hundreds of thousands of people annually hear the words that “no one wants to hear.” She described that “what follows is a path that tests every part of who we are: physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually,” and added that it affects everything around us, including “the quiet moments we spend alone with our thoughts.”

The Princess of Wales paused her public engagements after her cancer diagnosis to focus on her treatment, but has gradually resumed public life since announcing her remission the previous year.

In May 2026, she took her first trip abroad since the diagnosis was revealed, visiting the northern region of Italy as part of her activities.
