The Japanese Digital Agency announced a significant redesign of the passport application interface within the My Number Portal, scheduled for the summer of 2026. This update’s main objective is to simplify procedures, especially for parents who need to request the document for their children, and to introduce a tool that will allow you to pause and resume filling in data with a single command. In conjunction with these changes, the current My Number Portal application will be updated and renamed to “My Number Application”, becoming the mandatory channel for new passport applications after the implementation of the new features.
New rules simplify passport applications for children on the My Number portal
With the modernization of the passport application platform, there will be a substantial review of the procedures so that parents, as legal representatives, can request passports for their dependents. Previous steps, such as pre-registering a representative and choosing the “Use as Representative” role during the process, will be completely eliminated. Now, requests can be initiated directly after logging into the parent’s account, speeding up the entire process.
Additionally, it will no longer be necessary to obtain the identification code in advance to issue electronic family registration certificates (electronic family registration card), as long as the request is made by one of the parents who is already included in the same family register. For those who need to check the progress of children’s requests made before the update, the “Use as Agent” function will be disabled, and the query will be transferred to the “To Do” menu after logging into the parent’s main account.
Ease of pausing and continuing filling in data in the My Number app
The process for temporarily suspending and resuming filling out a request will also be improved with the new version of the system. Previously, it was necessary to save the data entered into a “.dat” file on the device and manually load it to continue, a method that proved impractical. With the update, users will be able to pause and resume their applications with just a tap on the new application screen.
It is important to note that, after implementing the changes, it will no longer be possible to use old request files to resume procedures. Agência Digital advises users to complete any ongoing requests before the update or to restart the process from scratch after the update, ensuring compatibility with the new system.
