Katie Swan reached the second round of the Wimbledon tournament, marking the first time that a British tennis player has advanced in this edition. However, the day brought a negative surprise for Katie Boulter, who was surpassed by an opponent coming from qualifying during the second day of games.

The first day of the main competition on British soil saw the elimination of ten tennis players from the United Kingdom, a rate that represents the highest number of defeats in SW19 since daily records began in 2000.

Swan, who was considering ending his tennis career in 2024 because of a chronic back injury, managed to reverse the situation. In her first appearance in a Grand Slam after three years, she triumphed 6-4, 6-4 over Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu.

The 27-year-old athlete showed great emotion as she celebrated the achievement, her first victory in a Grand Slam main draw since overcoming the same opponent at Wimbledon in 2018.

The start of the tournament was considered a setback for the hosts, with the quick elimination of ten British players, including Cameron Norrie, the UK’s highest-ranked tennis player.

The scenario of disappointment was worsened by the announcement of Jack Draper’s withdrawal, made 24 hours before his initial match, due to an injury.

This news added to Emma Raducanu’s previous withdrawal, which occurred on the eve of the Championships due to a stress fracture in her right leg.

However, Swan brought a breath of optimism to the British fans, displaying an impeccable performance on his serve on Court 16 and winning 88% of the points played with the first serve.

She only faced a break point when she was about to close out the game, an instant when the intensity of the match seemed to reach its peak.

Even under pressure, Swan demonstrated control and, after the fifth match point, secured a victory that required great effort.

Her next step in the tournament will be a second-round clash against 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys or American tennis player Kayla Day, who also advanced from qualifying.

Katie Boulter became the eleventh British tennis player to be eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon, after being defeated 6-2, 6-4 by young Italian Tyra Caterina Grant.

This is the first time since 2017 that Boulter has suffered an elimination in the opening round at Wimbledon, and also her first defeat to a player coming from qualifying in a Grand Slam tournament.

The result is surprising, as it comes just 18 days after she achieved the most significant victory of her career in terms of rankings, by overcoming world number two, Elena Rybakina, in a remarkable performance at the Queen’s tournament.

Boulter was looking to overcome an unfavorable record on court three, but had a difficult start to the match as Grant, who had never competed in a singles match on grass before this year’s Wimbledon qualifying, quickly gained an early lead.

Unable to find a reaction, Boulter saw the first set lost and was unable to recover after a new setback at the beginning of the second set.

The British tennis player had no opportunity to break her opponent’s serve; Grant gave up just three points in his last four service games, securing victory safely.

Grant, an 18-year-old girl, was making her debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam, having secured her place through the qualifying phase.

The previous year, 13 British athletes were eliminated in the first round. Since 1988, such a high number of disqualifications in the initial round had not been recorded.

A total of nine British players will still play their matches on the second day of the tournament, at the All England Club.

For Tuesday, Jack Pinnington Jones is scheduled to return to finish his match against the American Brandon Nakashima, 28th seed, being at a disadvantage of 6-3, 7-6(5), 4-3.

Eastbourne semi-finalist Toby Samuel will face 15th seed Jakub Mensik, while Jan Choinski, the second highest ranked Briton, will face Vit Kopriva.

Jacob Fearnley will play against American Alex Michelsen, Arthur Fery will face Damir Dzumhur, Billy Harris will duel Karen Khachanov, 19th seed, and Harry Wendelken will face Valentin Royer.
