Michigan cat equals world record with impressive 28 verified toes on all paws
A domestic feline belonging to a family in the state of Michigan has been officially recognized as a world record holder by Guinness World Records. The confirmation came after a veterinarian certified that the animal has a total of 28 toes.
Toby, a 10-month-old kitten from the Henderson family, reached the same mark as the highest number of digits ever recorded in a cat. This feat had already been achieved by a Canadian pet named Jake, in 2002.
Normally, cats have 18 toes on their paws, a standard number for the species. However, animals that have digits beyond this count are classified as polydactyls, a genetic condition that alters the normal structure of the paws.

“Upon observing the feline’s little toes for the first time, my surprise was immense and almost unbelievable,” Lansing resident Delaney Henderson told Guinness World Records. She explained that, despite already having another polydactyl cat and expecting to see the extra “thumbs”, nothing prepared her for the peculiarity of Toby’s paws.
Henderson also mentioned that Toby’s facial expression and constant purring habit were the determining factors in her falling in love with the animal.

“From our first meeting, I felt a strong intuition that he belonged in my life, and I am deeply grateful to have provided him with a permanent home,” Henderson said.

Toby’s owners ensure that the atypical configuration of his feet does not cause any discomfort or difficulty in his daily movement.
“He is in excellent health and, apart from the need for more comprehensive care when cutting his nails – as he has 30 of them –, Toby is an ordinary feline, without any other specific concerns”, concluded Henderson.
