Netflix expands its interactive entertainment portfolio with the launch of “Unhinged,” a new horror game that redefines the experience by turning the player’s phone into a vital tool. Developed by Night School Studio, a studio acquired by the platform in 2021, the title puts the player in the shoes of Ava, who needs to survive a stormy night and blackout in her building, while trying to escape a killer who terrorizes the residents.
The plot of “Unhinged” is driven by interaction with important characters, such as Ava’s friend Claire, played by actress Sadie Sink, and the building’s janitor, Ben, who is voiced by Troy Baker. Ava herself is voiced by Zoë Kravitz. The project also has the creative contribution of renowned names such as David Fincher and Zach Cregger, mentioned in the acknowledgments credits, which generates speculation about the real extent of their participation in the development.
The collaboration between David Fincher and Netflix is a long-lasting relationship, responsible for acclaimed works such as “Mank”, “The Killer” and the series “House of Cards”. The filmmaker is also preparing for the release of “The Adventures of Cliff Booth”, a sequel to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, promised for December in the catalogue. The platform demonstrates a continued commitment to investing in formats that blend cinematic storytelling and interactivity for its subscribers.
Innovative game mechanics use the cell phone as the main control
The uniqueness of “Unhinged” manifests itself in the way it integrates the player’s mobile device into the gameplay. The smartphone not only functions as the main control, but also acts as a flashlight and the protagonist’s own cell phone interface within the virtual environment. Sean Krankel, director of Night School Studio, explained in an interview that the choice to use the user’s real phone was a natural decision to intensify the immersion. He highlighted that, even with the option of conventional controls, the experience of interacting directly with the cell phone screen, dealing with urgent messages and managing the flashlight, provides a unique and deeply personal dynamic to each game session.
Death as a central narrative element of Unhinged
Differentiating itself from many survival titles, “Unhinged” approaches the player’s death as a recurring component of the narrative. The director estimates that players will experience death approximately ten times throughout the story, which has an average length of 30 minutes. Each failure is accompanied by specific comments from the police officers about the crime scene, introducing elements of acid humor and dialogue that enrich the game’s universe. The studio, known for hits such as “Oxenfree” and “Oxenfree II”, emphasized the synergy between Sadie Sink and Zoë Kravitz so that the friendship between the characters Ava and Claire became the emotional pillar of the plot, even amid the horror scenario.
Evolution of Netflix’s strategy in the universe of games and interactivity
Netflix’s entry into the interactive content segment is nothing new. The company began this journey in 2018 with “Bandersnatch,” an episode of “Black Mirror” that allowed the audience to define the course of the story. In 2019, a game inspired by “Stranger Things” was also released. After internal restructuring of the game development team, co-CEO Greg Peters recently declared that the company continues to improve its approach to the sector, seeking a balance between original productions and a vast catalog of series for streaming, along with interactive experiences that captivate different subscriber profiles.
