The Yomiuri Giants recorded their ninth defeat of the season without being able to score, in a clash against the Chunichi Dragons. The setback changed the team’s record to 38 wins, 32 losses and 2 draws, reducing their lead in the table to just six games above the .500 mark. Despite the negative result, pitcher Whitley performed consistently, giving up just one run in six innings, but was credited with his fourth loss.

The decisive run for the Chunichi Dragons came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when the score was still tied 0-0. In a dangerous situation, with two outs and a runner on second base, Whitley gave up a single to left-center field by Sano, which drove in the only run of the game. The Giants’ offense, in turn, was ineffective, managing just three hits throughout the game and failing to get any runners to third base at crucial moments. The inability to capitalize on opportunities has been a persistent weakness for the team.

Changes and players in the Yomiuri Giants starting lineup

The Giants’ starting lineup for the matchup featured Urata at second base, Matsumoto in right field, Izumiguchi at shortstop, Cabbage in center field, Ohshiro at catcher, Dalbec at first base, Sakamoto Hayato at third base and Asano in left field, with Whitley starting as pitcher. Ohshiro assumed the catcher position, replacing Kishida, while Sakamoto Hayato returned to the starting lineup after two games.

Pitcher Whitley’s season performance

In his final appearance against the Chunichi Dragons, on June 20, he pitched 7 2/3 innings, throwing 109 pitches, allowing just one hit, recording ten strikeouts, giving up three walks and not conceding runs, which earned him his third victory. In three games against the Dragons, his record is one win and one loss, with a 2.65 ERA.

Ishikawa Takashi then hit a fly ball to center field. Ishii tried to advance to third base, but was thrown out by an accurate throw by Cabbage, ending the inning with no runs.

Giants offense doesn’t convert in the fifth inning

In the top of the fifth inning, with one out, Sakamoto Hayato got a base on balls. Asano, the eighth batter, then hit a single to center field, placing runners on first and second base. However, Whitley was struck out and Urata hit a ground ball to the shortstop, leaving the runners on base and the score unchanged.

The decisive run and Whitley’s exit in the sixth inning

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Muramatsu received a base on balls with one out. Hosokawa was struck out, but Muramatsu stole second base, creating a two-out, one-runner situation in scoring position. Sano then hit a timely single to left-center field, driving the run that gave Chunichi a 1-0 lead. After this play, Whitley was substituted.

Whitley’s final game performance

Pitcher Whitley’s final record was six innings pitched, one hundred total pitches, three hits allowed, nine strikeouts, four bases per ball/hit per ball, and one earned run.

Giants offensive ineffectiveness continues in the seventh inning

In the upper part of the seventh inning, the Giants team had a quick sequence of eliminations: Ohshiro was eliminated with a low hit to second base, Dalbec by strikeout and Sakamoto with a high hit to right field.

Safe entry of pitcher Oosato for the Dragons

Chunichi’s sophomore pitcher, Oosato, took the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning. He dominated the hitters, striking out Ishikawa on a high hit to shortstop, Ukai on a strikeout, and Ohno on a grounder to maintain the lead.

Muramatsu performed a sacrifice bunt, putting the team in a dangerous situation with two outs and a runner on second base. Takanashi was then replaced.

Tawa secures the end of the eighth inning

The Dragons’ fourth pitcher, Tawa, took the mound with two outs and a runner on second base. He got Hosokawa to hit a ground ball to the shortstop, ending the threat and maintaining the one-run lead.

Giants do not reverse the score at the last opportunity

In the top of the ninth inning, the Yomiuri Giants were unable to score against pitcher Matsuyama, and the game ended with the Chunichi Dragons winning 1–0.
