Google has made available in Brazil the functionality that allows users to modify their main Gmail address without the need to create a new profile. This tool makes it possible to change the name that precedes “@gmail.com”, preserving the original Google Account, all associated data and usage history.
This new option is particularly advantageous for individuals who have an old email address, wish to correct a name that they consider inappropriate for professional purposes or need to update their credentials without the hassle of redoing multiple registrations. Previously, the solution involved creating a new Gmail account and time-consuming manual migration of contacts, services, and subscriptions.
The release of this feature, which had been announced by the company at the end of March and initially implemented in the United States, is now available for Brazilian user accounts.
Simple steps to change your primary Gmail email
To modify your email address, users must access their Google Account settings directly through the Gmail application, following the following steps:
- Open the Gmail app and press the icon corresponding to your profile.
- Choose the “Manage your Google Account” option.
- Navigate to the “Personal Information” tab.
- Select the “Email” section.
- Press “Google Account Email”.
- Click on “Change your Google Account email”.
- Enter the new address you want to use.
What happens to your old address after you move?
It is important to highlight that the change will not result in the deletion of the previous email address. It will remain active, acting as an alternative alias connected to your Google Account, ensuring that messages sent to your old email continue to be delivered to the same inbox.
Consequently, if the previous email is registered on platforms such as social networks or other online services, important communications, such as verification emails and promotions, will continue to be received. However, it is essential that the user manually updates their login information on each website, application and service that used the old Gmail address.
The original email will still serve as an alternative for recovering your account in situations where you forget your password or block access. Furthermore, the user retains the freedom to send messages using the previous address, if they wish.
Restrictions imposed by Google on changing your address
Despite the convenience, Google has established some limitations for modifying the email address, aiming for user control and security:
- Each account may select a new address only once per 12-month period.
- There is a maximum limit of three new usernames allowed per account throughout its existence.
- If the user regrets it, they are allowed to return to the previous address, however, this action will prevent them from choosing a new email for a period of 30 days.
- The username that has been deactivated will not be made available for creating a new Google Account, remaining reserved and associated with the original holder.
