A new system, called SignalTrace, was developed by the company Leonardo US Cyber and Security Solutions with the purpose of improving Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) networks. Currently, these networks are already used by police forces to identify cars using cameras on highways. The great advantage of this technology lies not only in reading license plates, but in the ability to correlate the passage of a vehicle to the radio signals emitted by electronic devices on board.

The technological advancement brought by SignalTrace is manifested in the inclusion of sensors designed to intercept and differentiate Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and RFID signals. This data is then connected to information already captured by surveillance cameras. Within the Apple universe, for example, the system can identify not only an iPhone in the driver’s pocket, but also Apple Watches, AirPods and other accessories that emit digital identifiers useful for categorization.

How SignalTrace extends vehicle identification through radio signals

The developer’s proposal is to create a type of “electronic signature” for each vehicle. If a specific set of signals is repeatedly detected in association with the same license plate, the software has the ability to map travel patterns and frequent connections between individuals and their respective automobiles.

It is important to clarify that SignalTrace does not decrypt or access the content of device communications. The technology only acts on identifiers and signals radiated in the environment, without intercepting messages, calls or personal information contained on phones. Despite this technical distinction, the interconnection between devices, vehicles, locations and times has the potential to build highly detailed profiles about a person’s habits, even without having direct access to the content of their digital interactions.

This innovation represents a significant change, shifting the focus of surveillance from the license plate to the individual occupying it. Radio signals that once had everyday functions, like pairing a headset, can now turn into persistent investigative trails. The platform is expected to integrate with the ELSAG Enterprise Operations Center software, already used to manage data from license plate reading systems, positioning SignalTrace as an additional layer of monitoring.

To date, there is no confirmation that any specific agency has adopted SignalTrace technology. However, the ALPR camera infrastructure, compatible with the incorporation of these new sensors, is already widely disseminated in several nations. The debate about who will effectively implement this tool and what privacy guarantees will be offered to citizens, who would have their smartphones transformed into additional identification points when simply driving on the streets, remains open.
