A landmark incident occurred in June 1947, when aviator Kenneth Arnold set out from Chehalis, Washington, on a search for a missing military aircraft. However, the experience he had aboard his single-engine aircraft would be a watershed, creating a fascination in the United States that remains alive today.

While flying over Mount Rainier, Arnold reported seeing nine singular, wingless objects moving at a speed of 1,930 km/h, exceeding the capabilities of any aircraft of that period. His attempt to explain the sighting led to the popularization of the expression “flying saucer”, now common in the American lexicon.

Since the Arnold episode, the belief in the existence of extraterrestrial beings has captured the attention of citizens in the United States, with a growing number of adherents. Recent surveys illustrate this change in public perception. A 2019 Gallup poll indicated that 33% of Americans considered some UFOs to be alien craft, while 60% attributed the phenomena to human action or natural factors. Surprisingly, in 2021, just two years later, the proportion of believers in UFOs of alien origin rose to 41%, while 50% still trusted earthly or scientific explanations, reflecting a growing openness and curiosity driven, in part, by new government revelations.

Two crucial factors boosted acceptance of the idea of extraterrestrial life in the United States: discussions promoted by the government and the influence of popular culture.

The impact of popular culture and government discussions

American cinema, with its vast global influence, has played a significant role in cementing belief in other forms of life. 1950s science fiction classics like “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and “The Body Snatchers” helped spread this perspective. Today, this legacy persists with successful productions such as the “Avatar” franchise and the films in the “A Quiet Place” series conquering the box office.

The United States government, in turn, went further than Hollywood in investigating the issue of unidentified flying objects, intensifying public speculation. In April 2020, the Department of Defense released videos recorded by military pilots that allegedly showed UFOs. Subsequently, in July 2023, a former member of the Air Force testified before the House of Representatives, stating that the US military had withheld crucial data on sightings of “non-human” entities since the 1930s.

The resurgence of the discussion and possible explanations

Similar to the Cold War era of the 1950s, interest in UFOs is again on the rise, driven by concerns about national security. The Chinese spy balloon incident in 2023 and fears of Russian infiltration have led to several reports of sightings. There is also widespread confusion between the proliferation of Starlink satellites and possible extraterrestrial activity. In November 2024, the Pentagon reported that most reports of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) can be explained by balloons, drones or other common objects, but highlighted that many cases still await definitive elucidation.

Records of UAPs and UFOs in the United States are especially concentrated in the Western region, favored by the vast number of locations with low light pollution and darker skies, which facilitates observation. Individuals who believe they have witnessed something of extraterrestrial origin can report it to the National UFO Reporting Center, an organization that relies on volunteers to discern the truth of the reports.

Kansas Cities With Most Recorded Sightings

Although states like New Mexico and Nevada are widely associated with UFO sightings, information from the National UFO Reporting Center indicates that California leads the ranking, with more than 17,200 reports recorded as of July 2, 2026. The question then arises: what is the status of these occurrences in Kansas cities?

To answer this question, the company Stacker created a classification of locations in Kansas with the highest rate of UFO sightings. The analysis was based on records from the National UFO Reporting Center, comprising all statements since 1995. It is worth noting that sightings listed in multiple cities were excluded from the research.
