Danny McBride details the development of the new G.I. Joe film
It’s been a long time since G.I. Joe aficionados were able to watch a movie from the series in theaters. However, everything indicates that the next debut is closer than anyone imagined. During his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, hosted by Josh Horowitz, McBride confirmed that he is preparing the script for a new film in the G.I. Joe franchise, under the auspices of Paramount.
The actor and screenwriter expressed great enthusiasm for the project. “Yes, I wrote it. I’m really excited about it. I’m really excited about the script. Paramount seems to be excited too. Hopefully we can shoot it next year,” McBride said.
McBride confessed his deep passion for the G.I. Joe saga. He highlighted that the series, made up of cartoons and comic books, represented his main obsession as a child, even surpassing his interest in Star Wars and other productions. “I love G.I. Joe. I still have all the dolls”, he added, highlighting his personal connection with the intellectual property.
He revealed that his original pitch to Paramount was for a film focusing on the Dreadnoks. However, the studio argued that the priority was to relaunch the main franchise. From this conversation, McBride was asked if he had an idea for a traditional G.I. Joe film, to which he promptly responded in the affirmative, directing his focus to the main series.
When discussing creative approaches to the upcoming production of G.I. Joe, McBride explained that the intention is to bring a more realistic perspective to the plot. He clarified that the project will not be a comedy, but rather a fusion of suspense and action, promising a fun plot with the participation of a complete cast.
The screenwriter also revealed part of the expected setting for the film. “You will follow Duke and a group of other Joes. There is a city, Springfield, that is secretly controlled by Cobra. That’s where our film takes place”, he detailed, giving a clue about the central location of the narrative.
The first two features in the G.I. Joe franchise, released in 2009 and 2013, achieved considerable box office success globally. However, the 2021 origin spin-off, titled Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, failed to replicate the same success and impact with the public.
So far, the new G.I. Joe film still has no official date for its release in theaters.
