The tension between the French and Moroccan teams manifested itself intensely in the press room at the Boston stadium this Wednesday. After coach Didier Deschamps’ press conference, Moroccan reporters expressed dissatisfaction at not having had the chance to ask the coach questions. A quick discussion preceded the Frenchman’s return, who, visibly uncomfortable, agreed to answer one more question, highlighting the intensity of the rivalry not only on the field, but also off it.

Coach Didier Deschamps is called back to respond to the press

In accordance with FIFA protocol, Deschamps had spoken to the press for approximately 20 minutes. The event took place at the venue of the semi-final, scheduled for Thursday, at 5pm (Brasília time). However, the French Football Federation’s advisory team prioritized professionals from their own country. After questions in Spanish and English, the session was closed, prompting a demonstration by Moroccan journalists.

Initially confused by the situation, the technician got up to leave the place. He, however, resumed his place to justify the interruption. “I apologize, but I have a long journey back (to the hotel), I need to have lunch with my athletes, organize training,” he explained. “I left very early and I have commitments. How many of you are present? If fifty people raise their hands, I can’t answer all fifty questions. But, okay, ask one more…”, he added.

After the incident, a Moroccan journalist asked the coach about the apparent relaxation of the French team. The question referred to a video posted on social media that showed the team in a relaxed atmosphere during training. Deschamps quickly rebutted the insinuation: “I don’t know if you’re trying to say that we’re in a festive mood. It’s not true. We respect the Morocco team, but there is only one place in the semi-final for both teams. We won’t release images of our players crying, although I imagine some of them will cry. Just as Morocco won’t do that either… We don’t want to disrespect anyone,” he said.

The dispute for a place in the World Cup semi-final between France and Morocco will begin this Thursday. The game is scheduled for 5pm (Brasília time), at Boston Stadium. The classified team will advance to the semifinals in Dallas, on Tuesday, at 4 pm, where they will face the winner of the clash between Spain and Belgium.
