Microsoft’s gaming division underwent an intense restructuring, generating great expectations in the industry. After layoffs, significant project cancellations and several changes to the Xbox structure, the gaming community is wondering which titles remain safe within the platform.
In light of the transformations, a series of important details were revealed about the future of the main franchises that are part of Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, Activision and Blizzard, clarifying the current panorama and the company’s strategic directions.

The Forza Motorsport franchise, for example, was one of the most affected by the recent changes. With the launch of the 2023 edition below expectations, Microsoft decided to end development of the simulation series, relocating the Turn 10 studio to support the team responsible for Forza Horizon. This decision reinforces the prioritization of titles with greater profitability or success with the public.
A similar situation occurred with The Outer Worlds. According to information released, the game’s sequel did not reach the expected sales projections for the Xbox, resulting in the cancellation of the franchise. However, Obsidian Entertainment remains an essential studio for Microsoft, with plans to develop new initiatives.
The fate of several other renowned series still generates uncertainty. Among those most at risk are Psychonauts, whose future at Double Fine awaits definition, and Senua, linked to the Hellblade universe, where Ninja Theory’s situation remains unstable even with the announcement of a new project. South of Midnight also finds itself in a delicate position, as good reviews have not been converted into satisfactory sales.

However, there is good news for many of Xbox’s biggest and most profitable franchises, which have their futures secured. Microsoft maintains substantial investments in titles such as Halo, Gears of War, Fable, Forza Horizon, Minecraft, State of Decay 3, Clockwork Revolution, Grounded 2 and Age of Empires. In the case of Age of Empires, future advancement will depend on the results of Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming projects.
Bethesda, another important pillar, also remains in a stable position. The company continues to develop DOOM, The Elder Scrolls Online, The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout, in addition to actively working on Marvel’s Blade and the next installment in the Wolfenstein franchise.
For Activision Blizzard, there is no reason for immediate concern. Call of Duty continues to be one of the most valuable intellectual properties for Microsoft, and franchises such as Diablo, Overwatch and World of Warcraft will have their development maintained according to established long-term plans.
