The cooperative horror game “Escape the Backrooms” is now available for the Nintendo Switch 2, as announced this Tuesday, July 9th. The first-person title, which immerses players in the creepypasta universe of Backrooms, an internet phenomenon about creepy liminal spaces, focuses on exploration, escapes and strategic communication between up to four participants.

Developed by Fancy Games and Blackbird Interactive, with Secret Mode as publisher, “Escape the Backrooms” has come a long way since its release. On the Steam platform, it was in early access from August 11, 2022, and was finally released in its full version on October 23, 2025, after more than three years of active development.

The game’s structure, detailed on its official Steam page, includes more than 30 distinct levels, all inspired by the rich lore of the Backrooms. Players must traverse complex environments, avoid hostile entities, and complete team escape objectives. The fundamental rule of cooperative mode requires that all group members reach the exit alive, transforming coordination into a more critical factor than mere individual survival.

One of the most striking aspects of the title is its innovative proximity voice chat. While players can communicate freely during exploration, there is a crucial challenge: the entities present in the game can hear their conversations. This mechanic transforms communication from a simple resource into a strategic tool that needs to be used with extreme caution, especially in moments where silence is essential to avoid attracting danger.

The game maintains a minimalist interface and focuses on a dark atmosphere, which perfectly reflects the premise of empty spaces, anonymous corridors and locations that seem familiar, but are deeply disorienting. Its Steam page also points to very positive user reviews, 34 achievements, single player and online cooperative game modes, as well as integrated interactive and chat features.

As for localization, the Steam platform lists support for 12 languages, although Italian is not present. The game page also indicates an age rating for over 16s in Germany, a detail that helps to contextualize the experience. The title remains faithful to the cooperative horror genre, built on pillars of constant tension, the need for guidance and efficient group management.
