PlayStation Portable (PSP) enthusiasts now have an enhanced opportunity to revisit the experience of Sony’s iconic handheld. On Wednesday, July 9, 2026, the Play Field Portal app received its 1.0.0 update, incorporating features that bring Android-based handheld consoles even closer to the aesthetics and navigation of the original PSP.
Developed by JohnnyCollado, this front-end software transforms the Android systems interface into an environment faithful to the PSP’s XMB, replicating the organization of menus, visual elements and the device’s characteristic navigation method. The latest version can now be downloaded via GitHub.
Compatibility with classic themes and new customization tools
One of the big new features of this update is the introduction of compatibility with PTF files, the official format that the PSP used to customize themes. This allows users to directly import and apply a wide range of themes created for Sony’s console to their compatible Android devices, reigniting nostalgia and original customization.
In addition to supporting retro themes, the Play Field Portal now offers a new, integrated customization system. This tool automatically generates harmonious color combinations, using a background image and an accent color to adjust elements such as waves, gradients, the cursor and interface icons, providing deeper customization.
For those who prefer to create their own themes from scratch, the developer has released an exclusive Theme Editor for Windows. With it, you can design and assemble customizations on a larger screen before exporting them to your portable Android console, facilitating the creative process.
Additional functions and improved file management
The update expands the application’s capabilities beyond mere visual replication. Among the new functions, the optional integration with Discord stands out, which includes features such as friends list, game activity sharing and support for voice chat directly from the Play Field Portal interface.
Another significant advance involves file management. Play Field Portal now uses Android’s Storage Access Framework, which eliminates the need for extensive storage permissions. This method offers a safer and more efficient way to access games and other content stored on the device, ensuring greater privacy and control for the user.
Version 1.0.0 also includes support for importing PC games and brings improvements to touch navigation. These improvements make the front-end more intuitive and practical, both for devices that do not have physical controls and for use on touch screens, increasing accessibility.
The Play Field Portal app is available in two distinct editions. The standard version, at around 50 MB, offers full integration with Discord. The Lite edition, more compact at approximately 8 MB, removes this feature to reduce the total size of the application, meeting different storage and usage needs.
