The action RPG Project Awakening, announced eight years ago, is back in the spotlight, with Cygames reiterating that the game’s development is actively continuing. After a long period without major news, the expectation of some players was that the title could have been canceled, joining the “vaporware” category, but the Japanese producer confirmed that work in its studios continues.
The company, which is responsible for the acclaimed Granblue Fantasy series, provided an update on Project Awakening through its president, Koichi Watanabe. He assured that the game is “progressing steadily” and that “all team members are working daily with the firm belief that things are taking shape.” This statement aims to calm fans who are eagerly awaiting more information about the project.
The last time the title was officially mentioned was in 2024, when Cygames reiterated production progress in a corporate statement. Watanabe explained that while the “general direction remains pretty much the same”, development allowed for “refining it and adding new elements” over time.
New images indicate that the release of Project Awakening may be close
The wait persists, however, there are new promising signs of progress in development. Recently, the production team shared never-before-seen footage from Project Awakening. The release of these new screenshots suggests that Cygames may be preparing to reveal the game to the public in the near future, raising hopes of an imminent release.
Initially, Project Awakening was announced with the PlayStation 4 as its launch platform. However, considering the extensive development period, it is highly likely that the title will be targeted at the PlayStation 5. This platform transition is corroborated by job vacancies published by Cygames itself as early as 2021, which were looking for professionals to work on projects for the new generation of consoles.
