A new police thriller series was launched by Netflix and is ideal for those looking for a short production to binge. “I’m Not Afraid,” which arrived on the streaming service on July 8, consists of just six episodes and chronicles the journey of a group of children immersed in a mysterious and disturbing plot in 1980s Mexico.

The miniseries of Mexican origin is based on the book “I’m Not Afraid”, by author Niccolò Ammaniti, a work that had already received a film adaptation in 2003. However, the recent version transports the narrative, originally set in Italy, to the city of Veracruz, during the effervescence of the 1986 World Cup, using the world of football and the social situation of the time as central elements of the plot.

The plot follows Miguel, played by Aldo Emiliano Navarro, a young man who lives in a rural community where children dedicate themselves to playing football and watching the World Cup. The course of his life changes drastically when he discovers Felipe, Yago Andreu Sandoval’s character, a child trapped inside a hole, beginning an investigation that gradually reveals increasingly dark secrets about the place and its inhabitants.

Despite the participation of young protagonists and the engaging atmosphere of mystery, “I’m Not Afraid” does not explore supernatural territory, unlike well-known productions such as “Stranger Things”. The series opts for a coming-of-age approach, in which the child characters are forced to face complex moral dilemmas while trying to maintain their integrity and sense of justice.

Throughout its six chapters, the Netflix thriller deeply delves into themes such as trauma, social inequality, the value of friendship and the fears inherent in childhood. The rural setting chosen for the setting intensifies the feeling of isolation, as the characters navigate through stunning natural landscapes and confront increasing dangers that sustain the tension until the end of the story.

A new miniseries ideal for binge-watching on Netflix

The narrative also delves into the role of the adult characters, establishing a striking contrast between the innocence of the youngest and the choices made by those who have already been shaped by life’s adversities. The miniseries format allows for a more complete development of the individuals and secrets that permeate the Netflix community, culminating in a conclusion that moves away from the traditional model of a completely happy ending.

Although “I’m Not Afraid” went somewhat unnoticed in some global markets, the production reached Netflix’s Top 10 in several Latin American countries in just three days after its release. With six episodes, a complete story and an original approach to the detective genre, the miniseries presents itself as an agile alternative for those looking for an engaging thriller to watch on a weekend.
