Orange consumption can be an important ally for respiratory health, mainly due to its high concentration of vitamin C and other antioxidant compounds. Scientific research, cited by the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, suggests a positive relationship between regular intake of this fruit and strengthening the immune system, minimizing inflammation in the airways and protecting the lungs against the harmful effects of pollutants.

Health experts explain that vitamin C is crucial in combating oxidative stress, a process triggered by the action of free radicals, which are produced by exposure to pollution, cigarette smoke and other particles present in the air. This mechanism may therefore play a significant role in preserving lung cells and attenuating inflammatory processes.

Research carried out by the University of Nottingham highlights that vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant, which can benefit lung function, especially in individuals living with chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Another survey, published in the European Respiratory Journal, demonstrated that a diet rich in citrus fruits is associated with a reduced incidence of obstructive lung diseases in older people, highlighting the importance of nutrition for lung health throughout life.

Helps relieve symptoms during colds and flu

In addition to offering protection to the lungs, vitamin C plays a fundamental role in the production and proper functioning of white blood cells, the cells responsible for defending the body against infections.

An analysis conducted by the University of Helsinki points out that, although vitamin C supplementation does not significantly reduce the overall risk of developing colds, it can help reduce the duration and intensity of symptoms. It is important to emphasize that the nutrient, by itself, does not replace established medical treatments nor does it offer complete prevention against infections.

Health professionals strongly recommend that you prioritize consuming the fruit in its entirety, rather than just the juice. This is because the orange pulp retains important fibers and other compounds that are beneficial to the body, lost in the processing of the juice.

Orange also offers benefits for the heart and skin

Orange also contains flavonoids, such as hesperidin, a substance that has been associated with cardiovascular health. According to studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, frequent intake of citrus fruits may be related to a decreased risk of stroke.

Additionally, the fiber present in the fruit is useful for controlling LDL cholesterol levels, known as “bad cholesterol”, while potassium actively contributes to maintaining blood pressure balance.

Vitamin C also participates in the synthesis of collagen, an essential protein for preserving skin elasticity and firmness. Additionally, recent research links regular consumption of foods rich in antioxidants to protecting the skin against damage caused by ultraviolet radiation and environmental pollution.

What is the ideal amount of oranges to consume?

The ideal amount of oranges to be consumed daily varies depending on each individual’s health conditions, according to El Tiempo. People who suffer from kidney disease, for example, should seek medical advice, as excess potassium can be harmful in these cases.

For the general population, experts suggest including the fruit regularly in a balanced diet, opting for fresh consumption. This form of ingestion guarantees the preservation of fiber and other nutrients in greater quantities than when the fruit is consumed in the form of juice. It is essential to remember that, although orange contributes to respiratory and immunological health, it should not replace vaccines, medications or other treatments recommended by health professionals.
