Conor McGregor’s return to the octagon at UFC 329, an event anticipated as one of the biggest in the history of the sport, culminated in an unexpected and frustrating outcome.

The fighter known as ‘The Notorious’ dedicated years to an intense process of recovery and preparation to return to the place where he achieved stardom. His long absence began after one of the most severe injuries ever seen in combat sports, a serious leg fracture suffered during the trilogy against Dustin Poirier, which put not only his career but also his quality of life at risk. He subsequently faced a doping suspension and several fight cancellations, but all of that seemed irrelevant when Sinéad O’Connor’s iconic song “The Foggy Dew” announced his triumphant entrance.

The tension was palpable throughout the MMA world as the acclaimed fighter walked towards the Octagon. Unfortunately, expectations far exceeded the duration of the confrontation. Moments after the start of the fight, Conor McGregor suffered a disabling injury that completely compromised his strategy and his chances of victory. No one could have predicted that he would tear his anterior cruciate ligament in the first moments of the fight, giving Max Holloway a technical knockout victory just 69 seconds into the fight.

The suddenness and shocking nature of the result reverberated intensely throughout the MMA community, leading several other UFC athletes to express their opinions on the anticlimactic ending to the rematch between McGregor and Holloway.

A number of these fighters took advantage of the moment to openly criticize McGregor, while he was still recovering from the blow of the defeat.
