Renowned rapper Jay-Z surprised audiences by appearing with a short haircut, marking a return to a look from nearly ten years ago, during the start of his residency at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, July 10. The revelation was accompanied by a video where his wife, Beyoncé, is seen trimming her long dreadlocks, a style the artist had maintained in recent years, to adopt the shaved cut reminiscent of his Y2K era.
The audiovisual material, previously released on channel X, shows the artist behind the successes of “Bodyguard” cutting her husband’s hair in the stadium stands. Upon taking the stage, Jay-Z covered his new hairstyle with a New York Yankees cap and performed his biggest hits wearing a black leather bomber jacket from the team, detailed with black and white stripes on the cuffs and hem.
During the same night, Beyoncé, founder of Cécred, and her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, aged 14, took to the stage alongside the rapper. Beyoncé caught attention with a black pinstripe blazer, paired with capri pants in the same tone, and her long blonde hair styled in curls with a side parting, while performing Mary J. Blige’s verse on the song “Can’t Knock the Hustle” alongside her husband.
Blue Ivy demonstrated her musical talent on the piano, wearing a white striped New York Yankees shirt, a blue team cap and baggy jeans. The teenager, with her long blonde hair parted down the middle in curls, mirrored her mother’s glamorous style for the evening’s performance.
Recently, Beyoncé had shared another intimate moment from Jay-Z’s hair routine. On June 21, a video on YouTube channel Cécred showed the “Drunk in Love” singer combing his long dreadlocks after a detangling and washing process.
“Everyone wants to know the details of Jay’s hair transformation,” Beyoncé narrated in the video, explaining that the complete dreadlock care process took a week. She confessed: “I was pretty obsessed with Jay’s dreadlocks. Honestly, I didn’t want him to cut them off. There are a lot of memories stored in dreadlocks.”
Jay-Z began growing his famous dreadlocks in 2017. The “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer revealed the emotional story behind his decision in a YouTube video, explaining that his daughter, Blue Ivy, was the main inspiration for the change in look.
“I always thought it was beautiful that the real reason Jay grew his hair was to show Blue that her hair was like his,” Beyoncé said. She explained that her daughter, then five years old, didn’t feel very confident with her own hair. “When she told her dad about this, it inspired Jay to grow her hair out too. We really wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her beautiful curls.”
