A Labrador retriever named Tokyo was rescued from Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, after ingesting marijuana that had been left on a trail. The incident occurred while the animal was accompanying its owner, Christina Bluhme, a dog training professional, who reported the loss of movement in its paws and the pet’s unconsciousness during the journey.
“She quickly lost the movement of her paws, alternating between moments of consciousness and unconsciousness, and I really thought I was going to lose her,” declared Christina Bluhme, sharing the distress on her social networks.
The owner had to call the Lochaber mountain rescue team, as it would be impossible to carry Tokyo, who weighs 25 kg, back. The dog was transported on a special stretcher until it received veterinary care.
Christina Bluhme described the recovery as “incredible”, with Tokyo fully recovered the following day, despite remaining unconscious during much of the transport and hospitalization. The veterinary diagnosis showed that the symptoms of the sudden illness were consistent with cannabis poisoning, a substance often discarded inappropriately in public places and trails, which highlights the danger for curious animals.
The Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team reported responding to three calls in the mountains of the Scottish region on Sunday, July 6, the day of the rescue. They also confirmed, through social media, that Tokyo is doing well and has made a complete recovery.
