Cast search for live-action Naruto indicates older protagonists and altered plot
On Thursday, July 16, 2026, the selection of actors for the long-awaited live-action Naruto is already underway, focusing on the iconic members of Team 7. A worldwide search campaign for interpreters for Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke brought to light new details about the requirements required, pointing out that the adaptation of Masashi Kishimoto’s creation will not have such a young protagonist in its initial phase.
Naruto’s original narrative is divided into two major phases: the first portrays the characters at around 12 years old, while the second, known as Shippuden, follows them from the age of 15, culminating at the age of 17 in the Fourth Shinobi War. Although the initial expectation was that the film would follow the manga’s chronology, signs point to a direct jump to the Shippuden phase.

This information emerged from the published selection criteria. As noted by Knight Edge Media, a Hong Kong company has detailed the casting call requirements, indicating that the age range of the characters in the project will be 16 years old, but the selected actors must be approximately 20 years old.
Among the essential qualifications for candidates, they are required to be Asian or of Asian descent, speak English fluently and have some skill in martial arts or gymnastics. It is important to note that the gymnastics requirement was later adjusted in the original job description.
- Naruto: Asian candidates or candidates of mixed Asian descent, with a slender, athletic, energetic, expressive and fearless profile. Fluency in English is mandatory, with any accent acceptable.
- Sasuke: Male, aged between 16 and 20 years old (to interpret 16 years old). Must be Asian or of mixed Asian descent, slender, athletic, with striking features, reserved/stylish and intense. Fluency in English is mandatory.
- Sakura: Female, aged between 16 and 20 years old (to interpret 16 years old). Requires Asian or mixed Asian descent, athletic, physically fit, determined, elegant and intelligent. Fluency in English is essential.
Therefore, the expectation is that the live-action film will begin its plot directly with the events of Shippuden, and may incorporate some flashbacks to Team 7’s childhood, instead of following the manga’s line that begins with the characters at age 12. This increase in the age of the protagonists, common in many adaptations of youth works, reflects a crucial strategy: if the film becomes a successful franchise in theaters, the production will avoid concerns about the rapid growth of the actors, ensuring a more stable visual continuity for the characters throughout the possible sequences.
