The arrival of these promotions comes as Sony faces widespread criticism for its decision to discontinue support for physical game releases on its consoles. This measure generated dissatisfaction and spurred boycotts, due to the perception that it would diminish consumer rights over ownership of their games. Shortly afterwards, Crunchyroll, a subsidiary of Sony, announced restrictions on access to its store, which sells physical anime releases, linking them to a more expensive subscription plan. While it’s likely that this PlayStation promotion was planned before these controversies, the timing of its launch is undoubtedly opportune for the company.
