Four people are injured after the slab of a printing plant under renovation collapses in Recife
A slab collapsed in a print shop that was undergoing renovations in the Boa Vista neighborhood, in the center of Recife, on the morning of this Friday, July 17th. The incident resulted in four injured people, who were rescued by rescue teams and taken to specialized medical care.
The accident occurred at the company Carimbart, located on Rua da Saudade, close to Parque Treze de Maio. Immediately after the structural collapse, the Fire Department was called to rescue the victims who were trapped under the rubble.
Rescue efforts and Samu’s role in providing assistance
Teams from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) quickly arrived at the scene to provide first aid to the injured. Three vehicles were mobilized for the service, including two advanced support ambulances and one basic support ambulance, as well as a motorbike.

A sniffer dog was used by the Fire Department to carry out a thorough search of the wreckage. The objective was to ensure that there were no other people unconscious or buried, a crucial measure in collapse scenarios.
“All victims were removed conscious and oriented, being handed over to the health teams”, said Lieutenant Colonel Brayner, from the Fire Department. He explained that the definitive health status would be determined after examinations in the hospitals where the people were taken.
Details about the injured and the hospital situation
The four rescued victims received first aid on site and were taken to different health units in the capital of Pernambuco. The identification and status of each person were released by the authorities:
- A 27-year-old woman was taken to Hospital da Restauração, in the Derby neighborhood, in the Center.
- A 43-year-old man, identified as Wilton de Lima Campos, a civil police officer, suffered an injury to his left leg and also went to Hospital da Restauração.
- A 68-year-old man presented with an injury to his right leg and abrasions and was admitted to Hospital da Restauração.
- A 59-year-old man was rescued by the Fire Department and taken to Hospital Unimed III, located in Boa Vista.
Hospital da Restauração reported that, of the three victims who were admitted to the unit, civil police officer Wilton de Lima Campos and the 27-year-old woman were released with minor injuries. The 68-year-old remains hospitalized, but his health is considered stable. The 59-year-old man’s health status had not yet been confirmed until the last update of this report.
Investigations point to unlicensed structural interventions
The exact causes of the collapse are still under investigation by the competent authorities. Teams from the Recife Civil Defense and Neoenergia were on site to carry out inspections and take the first steps.

Civil Defense reported that, after an initial inspection, the external area of the property was isolated as a precaution. The agency identified signs of structural interventions in the building, including the removal of walls. Therefore, those responsible for the printing company were notified and must present the license for the renovation that was being carried out. This detail raises important questions about the safety and regulation of works in the city, highlighting the importance of projects and permits for any changes to building structures and the need to follow engineering standards to avoid new accidents.
Neoenergia, an energy concessionaire, sent a team after being called by firefighters. The action was to turn off the power to the affected building, ensuring the safety of rescue and investigation operations. The company clarified that it will not be necessary to shut down other properties nearby.
Reports from those who witnessed what happened
Officials and neighbors who were nearby at the time of the accident described moments of shock and despair. Their statements help to reconstruct the seconds after the structure collapsed, highlighting the intensity of the incident.
Bruno Rodrigues, one of the employees who participated in the renovation work, said that the collapse happened while they were demolishing walls in the upper part of the property. “We had already removed a wall, it was on the second wall, and that’s when it collapsed”, he reported, who was at the back and ran when he heard the bang. He expressed concern for a friend who was trapped in the rubble, but fortunately saw him conscious.

An electrician, Bruno da Silva, who worked in a building opposite the printing plant, heard a loud bang. He and other colleagues went down to help. “There was a young man who is a civil police officer who was under the rubble, he was badly injured, his leg was broken”, described Silva, emphasizing the difficulty of the rescue due to the weight of the slab. Many people hesitated to help for fear of further collapses, but the collective effort was essential to remove part of the rubble and help the victims.
