The decisive clash of the 2026 World Cup, scheduled for this Sunday (19), will put Spain and Argentina face to face in search of the title. However, one detail will catch the attention of spectators: the Spanish national team’s anthem, unlike several other nations, does not have official lyrics to be sung.

While Argentine athletes passionately sing the words of their traditional anthem, the Argentine National Anthem, Spanish players remain silent during the melody of their home song.

The reason for this particularity is deeply historical. The Royal March, the name by which Spain’s anthem is known, is among the oldest compositions globally, having its origins as a military march in the 18th century. Although several regimes and institutions have tried over time to develop a definitive letter, no initiative has achieved consensus to be officially implemented.

One of the main justifications lies in the notable cultural and regional diversity that characterizes the country. With its autonomous communities, such as Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, cultivating distinct identities and dialects, the task of creating a letter that universally represents all Spanish citizens invariably provokes intense debates and disagreements.

The most recent major initiative to resolve the issue took place in 2007. On that occasion, the Spanish Olympic Committee organized a competition to select lyrics for the melody. However, the winning suggestion was widely criticized and discarded within days.

Since that period, the Marcha Real continues to be presented exclusively in its instrumental version. Thus, before Spanish national team games, players usually just listen to the composition or follow it without singing any words, a moment that often intrigues those who are unaware of the historical trajectory of the anthem.

Other nations with official instrumental anthems

The Spanish are not the only ones to have an anthem without words. Three other countries also have only the melody as their national sound representation:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Kosovo
  • San Marino
