The persistence of a dream that seemed distant after refusals

In 2017, at age 39, Anil Menon faced the fourth consecutive denial of his application to become an astronaut by NASA, a setback that deeply shook his hopes. Despite having advanced to the final stage of the selection process, the dream of a lifetime seemed to slip through his fingers, especially considering that his age exceeded the average of candidates typically selected in that period.

The impact of these denials was so strong that Menon confessed to having “admitted defeat” and believing that his chances of going to space were “zero percent”. This period of disillusionment propelled him into a phase of intense reflection, in which he devoted time each day to writing in a journal about his passions, purpose, and core principles. From this introspection, a new direction was born: space medicine.

His conviction was clear: if he could not go to space as an astronaut, he would find a way to contribute to space exploration by helping others do so. This new mentality was essential for future decisions that would shape not only his trajectory, but also that of his wife, Anna, in a union of destinies that would take them both to the cosmos.

A career full of adventures and humanitarian missions

Even before his saga with NASA, Anil Menon’s life was an adventure in itself. Raised in the American Midwest, he built an impressive academic background, studying neurobiology at Harvard and mechanical engineering at Stanford, where he also earned his medical degree in 2006.

His professional experience was equally diverse and intense. He worked as an emergency room doctor in Los Angeles and, at the same time, joined the Air National Guard, where he became a pilot. In this role, he participated in search and rescue missions aboard helicopters in Afghanistan.

    Menon has also applied his medical knowledge to some of the world’s most challenging situations:

  • He worked as an emergency doctor on Mount Everest, providing care in extreme conditions.
  • Provided crucial humanitarian assistance in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, following the devastating 2010 earthquake.
  • He flew search and rescue missions with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, demonstrating his commitment to service in dangerous contexts.

In 2014, he joined NASA as a flight surgeon, a position that placed him squarely at the center of space operations. His role included helping train and support six astronauts on long-duration missions to the International Space Station. All of these missions were launched from Baikonur, in Kazakhstan, using the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, then the only means of orbital access to the United States.

The risky bet on SpaceX and the professional turnaround

After NASA’s fourth rejection, and with a deep period of self-evaluation, Anil Menon saw a unique opportunity at SpaceX. The space technology company was in an advanced stage of preparation for the first manned mission of its Crew Dragon spacecraft and was looking for a doctor to assist with the project.

The proposal was intriguing: a role that would allow him to actively contribute to the forefront of private spaceflight. However, the decision to accept the job at SpaceX in April 2018 was not an easy one. Menon had an established career at NASA and several positions in emergency rooms in the Houston region.

He and his wife, Anna, had already built a family and strong roots in Houston, where Anna also enjoyed a promising career as a flight controller at the Johnson Space Center working on the Space Station program. Moving to California represented a “huge risk” for the entire family, as he described it.

Menon, however, embraced the new role with enthusiasm and an entrepreneurial mindset. He worked closely with NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken to ensure the safety of the Crew Dragon during the Demo-2 mission, helping to define protocols for the capsule’s recovery.

Shortly afterwards, Anna Menon also joined SpaceX, taking a role in crew operations management. The move to California proved “transformative,” solidifying Menon’s belief that “sometimes it’s worth the risk to take a chance on what you’re really passionate about, because it leads to some exciting opportunities.”

Preparations for Expedition 75 and a shared dream

The dedication, knowledge and innovative profile that Anil Menon demonstrated at SpaceX did not go unnoticed. In 2021, NASA, the same agency that had rejected him four times, finally selected him to join the coveted corps of astronauts. This moment marked the culmination of a journey of perseverance and the realization of a dream he had considered lost.

Now, in 2026, Menon is in the spotlight as he is one of the crew of Expedition 75, a long-duration mission to the International Space Station.
