Meta Platforms faces a significant trial this Monday, July 20, 2026, in Tennessee, United States. The state’s charges point out that Instagram’s design is largely responsible for a growing mental health crisis among young people. This is one of several lawsuits that, in the coming weeks, will test the claim that the company’s social media platforms were intentionally built to create dependency.

Tennessee, through Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti’s office, argues that the company violated state consumer protection law. Meta is accused of knowingly designing a product that induces teenagers to compulsive use, in addition to misleading the public about the security of its platform.

Instagram Features Under Court Question

During the process, the focus is on specific features of Instagram that allegedly contribute to addictive use. These features are considered by accusers to be key elements for digital addiction.

  • Automatic content playback:Functionality that keeps the user engaged without requiring action.
  • Reels Videos:Short, dynamic content that encourages continuous scrolling.
  • Constant notifications:Alerts that seek to re-engage the user repeatedly.
  • Ephemeral content designs:Features that make certain posts disappear after a period of time, creating a sense of urgency and fear of losing information.

Supposed concealment of internal research by the company

Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti’s allegations indicate that Meta failed to reveal extensive internal research. Such studies, according to the accusation, demonstrated that Instagram could cause harm to teenagers. Even though it was aware of the potential dangers, the company continued to offer problematic features without issuing warnings to users.

The legal implications and precedent for consumer protection

The Tennessee lawsuit could set an important legal precedent for protecting consumers in the digital environment. The central thesis is that companies have a responsibility to ensure that their products do not cause intentional harm, especially to vulnerable groups such as teenagers. The decision in this case could influence the way other digital platforms are designed and regulated.

Impact on mental health and the future of digital platforms

This judgment brings to light a crucial discussion about the impact of social media on young people’s mental health. The accusations against Meta echo global concerns about screen time, cyberbullying and the pressure for online validation. If the allegations are confirmed, the verdict could lead to significant changes to the design of platforms, forcing companies to prioritize users’ well-being over maximum engagement.

Scenario of multiple lawsuits against technology giants

The Tennessee case is not isolated; it is part of a growing wave of litigation against big technology companies. Other states and government entities in the United States and other parts of the world also investigate design practices that allegedly promote addiction and harm users. The social media industry faces increasing scrutiny, indicating that this judgment could be a milestone for corporate accountability in the digital sector.
