The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) approached coach Pep Guardiola to take command of the national team, after the team failed to secure a place in its third consecutive World Cup, according to a report carried out inJuly 20, 2026.
However, contact between Guardiola and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) lasted about a minute, as the coach expressed his intention to take a sabbatical after leaving Manchester City in May. The speed of the dialogue highlights the decision already made by the coach.
In addition to Italy, three other national teams have also expressed interest in Pep Guardiola in recent weeks, seeking the coach’s transition to the international stage.
To all contacts, the team of the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich commander informed that he is on sabbatical. Even so, some federations have expressed a willingness to wait, as there are no major international competitions planned for next year.
Although there is no confirmation on which nations sought the coach, the Netherlands is considered one of those interested, following the departure of Ronald Koeman, which occurred after the defeat to Morocco in the round of 16 of the World Cup.
England also appears among the possible destinations for Guardiola, with recurring speculation. The English Football Association, however, plans to keep Thomas Tuchel in charge, even after his elimination in the World Cup semi-final against Argentina. A future opening of the position for Guardiola, however, is not ruled out.
Italy’s search for a new coach continues with delays, prompted by the resignation of Gennaro Gattuso. He stepped down after the World Cup play-off defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina in April.
After changes in leadership, the Italian Football Federation announced Paolo Maldini as the national team’s new technical director. Brazilian Leonardo was also integrated into the team as a consultant, with the mission of supporting the choice of the next coach.
In addition to Guardiola’s name, Andrea Pirlo has been considered for the position, but Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini remain the main candidates at the moment.
The Italian team has faced a difficult period, having been absent from the last three World Cups and eliminated in the group stage in 2010 and 2014, after their fourth title in 2006.
The only recent moment of relief for the team was winning the Euro Cup in 2021, under the management of Roberto Mancini, contrasting with the current performance.
