Which steam mops didn’t live up to expectations in testing
The lowest-rated steam mops in Consumer Reports tests were difficult to use and left considerable residue on surfaces. Last in the ranking is the Shark Steam Pocket S3501, which proved to be ineffective at removing stains and produced little steam. Its lack of a motorized pump requires continuous pumping of the handle to generate steam, resulting in a below-average score for practicality. The Shark brand also produces the second worst model, the Shark S1000, with a similar pumping mechanism. The Dirt Devil WD20000 was the third-worst steam mop tested, with a poor cleaning score. Interestingly, the Labigo 10-in-1 KS-7883, currently one of the best sellers on Amazon, came in fourth place among the worst, proving to be inefficient for removing stains from ceramic tiles, in addition to having a short cable and limited autonomy.
Methodology of tests carried out with steam mops
To determine the cleaning effectiveness of steam mops, Consumer Reports engineers apply mustard, one of the most challenging stains, to ceramic tile. After the mustard has dried, photographs are taken and then a machine operates the steam mop over each tile in 10 uniform back and forth motions. Image processing software precisely records the amount of dirt that has been removed.
To evaluate the amount of steam produced by a mop, the water tank is filled, the device is weighed, used for 5 minutes and weighed again. The amount of water evaporated is then calculated to infer steam production.
When evaluating practicality, several attributes that contribute to the ease of use of the steam mop are considered. These include the steam heating time, battery life, cable length, steam intensity options and the presence of indicator lights that inform you when the device is ready for use or requires refilling. Other important factors include the ease of refilling and emptying the water reservoir, the quickness of removing the mop head, and the convenience of storing the handle when the device is not in use.
