CD Projekt schedules presentation of new The Witcher 3 expansion for Gamescom
Polish developer CD Projekt announced this Tuesday, July 23, 2026, that the long-awaited additional content The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past will gain its first spotlight during the European fair Gamescom 2026. The stage chosen for the unprecedented exhibition will be the traditional Opening Night Live opening ceremony.
The unprecedented package marks the third major addition to the award-winning fantasy title, scheduled to hit stores in 2027. The launch will take place exactly twelve years after the debut of the base campaign and eleven years after the acclaimed DLC Blood and Wine, which won the coveted award for Best RPG at The Game Awards in 2016, raising expectations for the new installment.

To bring this expansive universe to life, the producer signed a collaboration agreement with the Fool’s Theory studio. The partner team includes several veterans of the video game industry, including developers who worked directly on building the wizard’s original world.

Main news confirmed for the next chapter of The Witcher 3 saga
- The package called Songs of the Past is the third major narrative addition to the franchise.
- The commercial debut will take place in 2027, with versions optimized for computers, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- The creation process divides responsibilities between CD Projekt Red and the experts at Fool’s Theory.
Fans of the franchise will once again take control of the famous monster slayer, Geralt of Rivia, embarking on a completely new narrative. Availability of the material is set for 2027, exclusively covering current generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft, in addition to computers.
Company executives indicated that the adventure will act as a narrative bridge to the future The Witcher 4. Although it delivers a closed story about the protagonist after the end of the base campaign, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski assured that the plot will serve as a kind of conceptual introduction to the brand’s next major release.
During a financial conference held in May, the executive clarified shareholders’ doubts about the role of this content within the franchise’s universe. At the time, he also justified changing the release calendar to 2027, as the initial target was for the current year, and discussed the potential for new additions to the future trilogy.
When detailing the reasons for developing the additional package, Nowakowski highlighted the commitment to the gaming community. The manager emphasized the desire to provide a memorable adventure, ensuring that the public would be satisfied with the opportunity to revisit the classic scenarios from the third game.
The director also went deeper into the explanation about the work’s introduction status, highlighting that the strategy helps keep the brand warm in the popular imagination. He pointed out that this is not a direct prelude to the fourth game, but rather a tool to sustain engagement, with the absolute focus on delivering extremely high quality material to loyal fans.
Regarding the change in schedule, the co-CEO was transparent about the behind-the-scenes of production. He revealed that the studio planned to release the material later this year, but the board and programmers chose to postpone the premiere until 2027 in order to polish the final experience, prioritizing consumer satisfaction above any previously stipulated deadline.
Additional details about the theme emerged in a recent broadcast aimed at enthusiasts of the wizard’s universe. The producers drew attention to a third melee weapon wielded by the protagonist in a festive spring illustration, in addition to confirming the participation of the charismatic bard Dandelion in the plot.

Laura Beitzel, the executive responsible for managing the community, adopted a tone of mystery during the ten-year celebration of the last DLC. The professional avoided delivering major narrative twists, arguing that the team prefers the public to discover the secrets naturally during game sessions.
Despite the secrecy, the manager encouraged viewers to analyze old promotional materials for answers. She suggested that fans revisit art commemorating the festival of Belleteyn, a sacred date in the series’ mythology, published weeks earlier, ensuring that the image hides valuable clues about the plot.
The statement made direct reference to a digital painting and poetic text shared on social media in April. The illustration depicts the monster hunter resting near flames, while his musician friend plays an instrument for locals to dance on. The great visual highlight is a mysterious sword leaning against the protagonist, displaying a curved hand guard full of details, identical to the weapon shown in the official advertisement.
Amelia Korzycka, a member of the development team, commented on the equipment shown in the concept art. The developer confirmed the importance of the weaponry to the unprecedented story, promising that the exact function of the blade will be explained in future broadcasts, well before the official launch.
When asked about the scope of the project, the community team drew parallels with the company’s previous work. Representatives assured that the volume of content will follow the massive pattern seen in Blood and Wine, reinforcing that consumers should expect a robust and complete expansion, not just a small package of side missions.
The studio also took the opportunity to confirm the inclusion of new cards for the popular Gwent minigame. At the same time, the producer reiterated that it continues to work on implementing official cross-platform modification tools for the base title, although this feature does not yet have a set date for reaching the public.

As no gameplay footage has been revealed since the initial announcement in May, the community is eagerly awaiting the August event. The market’s expectation is that the presentation at Opening Night Live, scheduled for the 25th, at 3pm Brasília time, will deliver the first cinematic trailer and demonstrate the combat systems in action.
