The absence of a deposit scheduled for August in the payment calendar can cause apprehension for those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), especially those who depend on the amount for essential expenses such as housing and food. However, the explanation for this change is an adjustment to the schedule and not a cut in benefits.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will make the SSI payment for August 2026 on Friday, July 31, 2026. This advance occurs because August 1 falls on a Saturday. As a rule, federal benefits scheduled for weekends or holidays are released on the immediately preceding business day.
This way, program beneficiaries will have two SSI deposits in the month of July. The regular July payment will be made on July 1st, while the August amount will be credited on July 31st. Consequently, there will not be a separate deposit for the SSI during the month of August, as the money released at the end of July already corresponds to this period.
The advance deposit does not represent an additional benefit, and beneficiaries will not suffer financial losses. However, this change in the calendar may create challenges for the budget, as the amount received on July 31st must be managed until the next scheduled SSI deposit.
How payments for other Social Security benefits work in August
The SSI schedule is different from the retirement, sick pay, and death benefit payments administered by Social Security.
Most Social Security beneficiaries receive payments based on their date of birth. People born between the 1st and 10th of any month must receive the August benefit on August 12, 2026.
Payments for those born between the 11th and 20th are scheduled for August 19, 2026. Birthdays between the 21st and 31st will have their amounts generally deposited on August 26, 2026.
A separate timeline applies to individuals who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997, as well as to some beneficiaries who receive both Social Security and SSI. Social Security payments for these groups are typically made on the third day of the month, which will be August 3, 2026.
SSI offers monthly support to qualified people who are elderly, blind or have a disability, and who have limited income and financial resources. The federal maximum amount for 2026 is $994 for an eligible individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple, although the actual amount received may be less.
What to do if the July 31st payment is not credited
Most Social Security and SSI benefits are delivered electronically, either by direct deposit into a bank account or via a Direct Express debit card.
If beneficiaries do not identify the SSI advance payment on July 31, the first step is to contact the bank or financial institution. There may be a delay in clearing the deposit, even if SSA released the amount on schedule.
The agency advises that payees allow three additional business days for processing before reporting a missing payment. After this period, you can contact Social Security at 800-772-1213 or check your payment information through your “my Social Security” account.
Banking information, mailing addresses and other personal data must also be reviewed to identify possible errors that could interrupt the delivery of funds.
August will not be the only month with a different calendar for SSI in 2026. The November benefit will arrive on October 30, 2026, as November 1st will fall on a Sunday. Additionally, the January 2027 payment will also be advanced to December 31, 2026.
While the absence of a deposit in August may seem concerning, beneficiaries are not being neglected. The full monthly SSI payment will only be made one day before the beginning of August.
