Apple’s next generation of high-end cell phones will bring a drastic change to the photography set. Recent information indicates that the future iPhone 18 Pro Max will be equipped with the unprecedented Sony IMX905 sensor in the main lens. The big difference of this component is the ability to physically alternate the opening of the diaphragm, a technology that the American manufacturer has never used in its mobile devices and which promises to transform image capture in nighttime environments.

Physical light control mechanism arrives on the brand’s cell phones

The technical details became public after a cyber invasion of the servers of Tata Electronics, one of the suppliers of the technology giant’s production chain. The criminal group known as World Leaks published internal diagnostic reports that describe exactly the parts tested for the company’s most expensive cell phone. This type of early exposure breaks the traditional secrecy of the Cupertino-based company and reveals the strategic steps to dominate the electronics market.

The stolen files confirm that the Sony IMX905 component will take the place of the current main lens, keeping the physical size of the pixels fixed at 1.22 μm. The real innovation, however, was discovered in the analysis of a specific calibration module designed exclusively to manage the mechanical blades of the lens. This physical light control system is already quite common on rival devices that run the Android operating system, but will make its debut in the iOS ecosystem.

Direct impact on the quality of images captured by the user

In practice, having a lens that opens and closes allows the phone itself to physically regulate the exact amount of lighting that reaches the image chip. This mechanic solves one of the biggest problems in portable digital photography, which is visual noise in night photos. In addition to accurately brightening dark scenes, the feature gives the photographer much greater control over background blur, creating more natural portraits without relying solely on software tricks.

Adopting this optical flexibility marks a considerable evolution for Apple, correcting a historical delay in relation to Asian competition. Samsung, for example, was a pioneer by launching this exact functionality on the Galaxy S9, back in 2018, showing the benefits of changing the camera’s pupil. With the new system, the user will be able to use a wide aperture to suck in the most light at night, or close the aperture in the midday sun to ensure the entire landscape is perfectly focused and sharp.

Photographic components that will not change in the new generation

This ability to physically adapt turns the cell phone into a tool much closer to a dedicated professional camera. Professionals and amateurs who like to record everyday life will have at hand equipment capable of generating the coveted real depth effect, where the main object is isolated while the scenery melts into a soft blur. The union of this mechanical engineering with the manufacturer’s already powerful image processing algorithms should raise the visual standard of social networks.

Despite the revolution in the main lens, internal documents show that the company has adopted a conservative stance for the rest of the rear module. Hardware reports indicate that the auxiliary lenses of the future high-end model will be exactly the same as those that will equip the iPhone 17 Pro Max, without any generational leap in secondary chips.

  • Close-up lens (Telephoto): It is equipped with the Sony IMX973 chip.
  • Wide angle lens (Ultrawide): Preserves the Sony IMX972 component.
  • Depth mapping (LiDAR): Still using Sony IMX591 hardware.
  • Selfie camera (Front): Maintains the Sony IMX914 photographic sensor.

The decision to recycle these parts indicates that the manufacturer trusts in the technological maturity achieved by these specific sensors. They already deliver top-notch performance in today’s market, which allows engineers to focus all innovation and budget efforts on implementing the main mechanical diaphragm.

Corporate silence and the smartphone launch schedule

As is customary in the technology industry, Apple management completely ignores the leak and does not comment on products that are still in the development phase. The data extracted by World Leaks hackers has a high degree of credibility due to the industrial origin of the files, but the market treats the specifications as provisional. The company’s data protection culture tries, at all costs, to prevent competitors from anticipating its commercial moves.

The public loyal to the brand will need to exercise patience, as the official schedule indicates that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will only hit global shelves in September 2026. The ninth month of the year is traditionally reserved for major presentations at the company’s headquarters theater, where executives reveal the bets for the following season. Until the event takes place, the internet will continue to dissect every line of code and industrial design that escapes Asian factories.
