Intense snowfall forces Bariloche to declare climate emergency and issue warning to tourists in Argentina
The city of San Carlos de Bariloche, located in Argentina, instituted a state of climate emergency due to heavy snowfall that affected the location. Bariloche is recognized as one of the most popular tourist destinations in South America, especially for winter sports, which amplifies concerns about the impact of the situation on the season.
Local authorities communicated the decision on July 26, 2026, without establishing a final date for its closure. The emergency situation will be maintained “as long as adverse weather conditions persist in the city”, as informed by the city hall.
As a result, the municipal administration advised that both tourists and residents remain at home, avoid using vehicles and only travel in cases of extreme urgency or necessity.
The city hall also suggested the implementation of remote work or the adoption of flexible arrival times and other alternatives that seek to “prevent workers from being exposed to dangerous situations”.

The government initiative also seeks to speed up the activities of municipal teams, assistance services and the movement of vehicles considered essential.
During recent days, there has been a considerable accumulation of snow and ice on the highways, increasing the danger of skidding accidents. At least one incident was reported, requiring the intervention of rescue teams.
Heavy machinery was also mobilized, which helped remove accumulated snow and apply salt and sand to several streets and avenues.

Meals and shelter are distributed to families stranded in Bariloche
Faced with the emergency scenario, Bariloche implemented a relief operation to assist people who were stranded both at the bus terminal and at the city’s international airport.
Around 900 meals were distributed, consisting of pizzas, empanadas, ham and cheese sandwiches, spring sandwiches, as well as coffee and other hot drinks for travelers.

Local authorities also reported that “around a dozen families” were taken from the bus terminal to gyms maintained by the city hall.
“In these spaces, accommodation and shelter were offered to those traveling with children and the elderly, with the aim of allowing them to spend the night in a warm place and in more favorable conditions,” said the city hall.
