Rockstar details regional restrictions on GTA 6 pre-order codes
Rockstar Games has updated the Grand Theft Auto 6 support page, offering new clarifications regarding regional restrictions applied to download codes included in the game’s pre-order boxes. Initially, just over a month ago, several stores had released conflicting information about the functionality of these codes in different countries and regions, creating confusion among consumers. The company’s decision comes to organize the scenario before launch.

The developer’s confirmation is that, depending on where the physical copy is purchased, some limitations will apply to redeeming the digital code. This means that the origin of the product will play a direct role in its usability. It is a crucial point for players who intend to purchase the title in advance.
To avoid problems, Rockstar’s main recommendation is to purchase the game in a country that corresponds to your account on the platform. For example, a player with an American account must purchase an American copy of the game. This practice helps ensure that there will be no blockages or incompatibilities.

Important differences for PlayStation 5 and Xbox
PlayStation Network account restrictions are why the limitations only apply to the PlayStation 5 version of the game. For Xbox players, the situation is different: platform codes are not regionally locked and can be redeemed anywhere in the world, regardless of the region of the user’s account. This distinction was already an initial suspicion when the first information caused uncertainty.
Specific expiration rule for players in Japan
Rockstar support also revealed an additional complication for buyers in Japan. Physical copies of GTA 6 purchased in the country with code included will have an expiration date of 170 days from printing. The company explained that this measure complies with local regulations. Considering the November 19 release date, the last opportunity to redeem these codes would be May 8, 2027.

Success of digital pre-sales and the future of the physical disc
Despite regional issues, GTA 6 dominated digital pre-order lists in almost every PlayStation Store region. This performance was already widely expected, considering the enormous expectations surrounding the game. The absence of a physical disc in retail copies likely prompted many gamers to opt for digital purchase, which allowed them to pre-download the title.
The overall pre-sale numbers are positive for Rockstar, even amid some allegations about the amount already raised by the company. There is conflicting information regarding the release of a physical disc version: while one inside source suggested that this would happen before the end of the year, other sources dismissed the idea, stating that Rockstar has no plans for such a release at any point.
