About 300 imported red fire ants, classified as a dangerous invasive species requiring immediate attention, were discovered at the Kitakyushu Port No. 1 Container Terminal in the Tachiura region of Moji Ward, Japan. The city of Kitakyushu confirmed the presence of the insects. Authorities reported that there are no records of people injured due to the infestation.
The detection occurred during a routine inspection, which the Ministry of the Environment carries out five times annually. Fire ants were spotted in large numbers on July 24, clustered near baits laid out in a container yard. A specialized institution confirmed the identification of the species on July 27. After confirmation, the ministry implemented control actions in the affected area.

To date, no evidence has been found that the ants have dispersed beyond port facilities. The region will continue to be monitored and investigated. This incident represents the first confirmed occurrence of the species at the site.
