Microsoft on July 29 released quarterly results that exceeded analyst projections for revenue from its cloud division. This performance indicates that the company’s large investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure are bearing fruit, with the reduction of capacity limitations and the increasing adoption of technology by companies.

Revenue from Azure, the company’s cloud computing service, recorded 43% growth during the fiscal fourth quarter. This percentage exceeded the analysts’ consensus estimate, which pointed to an increase of 39.98%, according to data collected by Visible Alpha.

Following the announcement, shares of Microsoft, which is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, rose approximately 2% in trading after the market closed.

CEO Satya Nadella stated that “this year, Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time, and Microsoft 365 Copilot reached more than 30 million paid seats, reflecting the trust customers place in us to drive their AI transformation.”

This substantial advancement could alleviate concerns regarding the company’s growing spending on its data centers. It also serves to ease fears that artificial intelligence tools could eventually replace the productivity software business, a sector traditionally considered stable.

Microsoft’s performance comes on the heels of a notable quarter from its competitor Google Cloud. Alphabet’s cloud unit reported an 82% increase in revenue in the previous week, significantly higher than market projections.

Cloud Backlog Demonstrates Solid Performance

Microsoft reported that its backlog in the cloud sector totaled US$678 billion at the end of the quarter. This value represents an increase compared to the US$627 billion recorded in the immediately previous period.

M365 Copilot paid subscriptions surpassed the 30 million mark, an increase from 20 million in the previous quarter. Analysts projected, on average, 26.9 million subscriptions for Copilot, according to calculations based on estimates from several financial institutions.

The company projects an investment of US$190 billion throughout this calendar year. This amount is part of a record disbursement of more than US$700 billion by large technology companies, which has generated pressure on cash flow and raised concerns about possible excess production capacity.

In the quarter between April and June, Microsoft’s capital investments reached US$41 billion, representing growth of more than 70% compared to the previous year. This value is close to market estimates of US$42.37 billion. In the immediately previous quarter, the company had reported US$31.9 billion in capital investments.

Despite this, Microsoft is decreasing its dependence on OpenAI technology, incorporating Anthropic models into its solutions and expanding internal artificial intelligence development. The company also uses its strong commercial ties to drive adoption of Copilot, which costs $30 per month, including partnerships like the one established with Accenture earlier this year.

So far this year, the company is among the lowest performers in the group known as the ‘Magnificent Seven’ megacaps, recording an 18% drop. It lags behind competitors in the cloud computing segment, such as Alphabet.

Microsoft has communicated that the growth of its cloud division is being held back by capacity constraints, which the company expects to continue until the end of 2026. This situation has forced the company to prioritize between providing resources for its own artificial intelligence services, such as the Copilot 365 assistant, and making computing power available to customers via Azure.
