Filipino tennis player Alex Eala secured a place in the semifinals of the Mubadala DC Open on August 1, 2026, after a shock victory over second seed Elina Svitolina. The result places the young athlete among the four best in the tournament.

Eala demonstrated an excellent performance throughout the match, overcoming the experienced Ukrainian tennis player with scores of 6-3 and 6-4.

This was the second time that Alex Eala defeated Elina Svitolina, repeating the score from her previous victory at the Berlin Open, held last month. This history reinforces the Philippines’ ability to compete on equal terms with high-level opponents.

Regarding her performance, Eala said: “I think I came in with a great mindset today. I think I was playing really well, and of course Elina made some good shots. She was being aggressive, especially in the second set.”

The Filipino tennis player added, “I’m very happy that I was able to maintain my pace.”

In the first set, Eala and Svitolina exchanged service breaks in the first five games. The Filipina managed a crucial break in the sixth game, taking advantage of her opponent’s mistakes to open a 4-2 lead.

Svitolina managed to stay in the next game, but Eala showed great determination in the eighth game. The Filipina reversed a score of 0-40, forcing a deuce, and finished with a forehand winner to make it 5-3.

Eala then broke Svitolina’s serve in the next game, clinching the first set after 43 minutes of play.

The Ukrainian veteran looked to have turned the tide when she took a 3-1 lead in the second set, but a crucial hold of service in the fifth game fueled Eala’s comeback.

The Filipina took a 5-4 lead with another solid service game. On Svitolina’s serve, the Ukrainian managed to save two match points to force a deuce, but a backhand into the net put Eala on the brink of victory again. A double serve error sealed the triumph for the young star.

With this impressive result, Alex Eala is now prepared to face Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the semi-finals of the tournament. The confrontation promises to be one of the highlights of the competition, given the trajectory of the two athletes.

Eala commented on her upcoming opponent: “She is, of course, a very accomplished player and I think she’s made an impact on and off the tennis court for many reasons. There’s a lot of respect for her for that. I’m really excited.”
