Famous TV presenter Richard Hammond, known for his work on car shows, has had his driving license penalized and was fined a total of $2,302 (approximately £1,771) after committing two speeding offences. The incidents occurred in Herefordshire, England, in December, involving a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and a Bentley Continental GT.
The case gained prominence due to court records detailing the infractions and penalties imposed, serving as a warning. Even for people accustomed to driving powerful vehicles in controlled environments, such as race tracks, traffic rules on public roads apply to everyone, reinforcing the idea that fame does not offer privileges before the law.
Details of Richard Hammond’s driving offenses
Court documents confirm that Richard Hammond admitted committing two separate speeding offenses at the end of December, both of which were dealt with by West Mercia Police. The first of these, recorded on December 2, caught his Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo traveling at 109 km/h on a road on the A40 in Pencraig, Herefordshire, where the limit was 80 km/h.
Twenty days later, on December 22, the presenter was again caught speeding, this time driving a Bentley Continental GT. The vehicle was recorded at 132 km/h on the A50 Rudhall bridge, also in Herefordshire, in a section with a 112 km/h limit. The two incidents, on busy highways, happened just three weeks apart.
Magistrate Ann Minton led the court proceedings after some administrative delays relating to addresses. Hammond, who resides near Abergavenny, pleaded guilty to the charges through his lawyer. Other complaints, such as failure to respond to correspondence or identify the driver, were withdrawn, focusing the trial only on proven speeding violations.
The first infraction, with the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, a high-performance electric vehicle, exceeded the limit by 29 km/h. In the UK legal system, this excess margin usually leads to higher fines and driving license restrictions and is not considered a minor fault.
The second episode involved the Bentley Continental GT, a powerful luxury car. Although the speeding was minor, 19 km/h above the legal limit, it still exceeded the limit to justify formal action rather than a warning, especially considering the car model, road conditions and the driver’s recent history.
Financial penalties and points on the driver’s license
The total fine imposed by Magistrate Ann Minton reached 1,771 pounds sterling, which corresponds to approximately 2,302 dollars, contrary to some reports that mentioned a lower amount. This amount is the result of two specific fines for speeding offences, plus £240 in court costs and a £532 victim support fee.
In addition to the financial punishment, the court added seven points to Richard Hammond’s driving license, reflecting the combined seriousness of the two offences. In the UK, accumulating 12 points in a three-year period can lead to suspension of your driving license. The withdrawal of the secondary charges was an important factor in Hammond avoiding even more severe sanctions, concluding the case in relation to the admitted infractions with his Porsche and Bentley vehicles.
This incident highlights that modern traffic enforcement operates without distinction, regardless of the driver’s notoriety. Two high-speed violations in powerful cars were enough to generate significant four-figure costs and a considerable impact on the presenter’s license, even without accidents or direct police approach.
